Let Us Worship Together
Join us for worship this Sunday at 9:55am (or watch it later) on Facebook Live (link below)

We will take a listen to Jesus talking about the kindom of God via parables in Matthew 13. We think about these images and ideas Jesus gives us – with a sermon entitled Half a Dozen Ways. We will also try out a few new ways to think about all of this today. We will sing classic and new songs/hymns.

Tell someone about our worship services and help them find us!

You can find many of our worship services and mid-week meditations of the last several months on our YouTube Channel (Kevin Cameron) or on Facebook.com/ParkwayUnitedChurchOfChrist under videos.

Hiroshima & Nagasaki Memorial
This is an exciting moment in time. The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is nearly ratified. Ten more countries must sign on. Forty countries have already. It Is not just symbolic. When in International Law, weapons became banned and categorized as WMD such as chemical, biological, and land mines have, their use drops dramatically over time. What better designation for nuclear weapons than Weapons of Mass Destruction? Join the St. Louis Peace Women (WILPF) for a Zoom program, viewing of this 56 minute documentary followed by free discussion.

Week ending August 2 - Second Congregational UCC, Memphis…
2nd Cong has been the chapel for LeMoyne-Owen College since the late nineteenth century. The current building by Frank Nesbit and Harold E. Smith is the oldest unaltered church in Memphis designed and built by black artisans for a predominantly black congregation. The church houses a notable mural of a non-white Jesus painted by Reginald Morris, teacher at LeMoyne in the 1950s and 60s who studied mural painting in Mexico. [The church was placed on the National Register on August 26, 1982.]

I mentioned our eldest daughter’s college in a PUCC email last week, so it has been called to my attention that I should lift up our eldest son’s college. Please view this 3:46 minute video that looks and sounds like Pentecost!

Medicaid Expansion (Amendment 2) on Aug 4 Ballot
As many of you may recall, Parkway had an adult education session led by MCU last fall on the topic of Medicaid Expansion. At that time, a large signature effort was ongoing to get this initiative on the 2020 ballot. Missourians collected signatures from nearly 350,000 voters (many more than needed). On Aug. 4, 2020, Missourians will get to decide this issue. Missouri is only one of 14 remaining states that have not expanded Medicaid for those in need.

Here are a few key points about Medicaid Expansion:
  • It will help about 230,000 hardworking Missourians who have jobs that don’t come with health insurance and healthcare to Missourians who earn less than $18,000 a year.
  • It enables working women to get preventative care to detect and treat breast and cervical cancers early, saving thousands of lives.
  • It helps our economy by protecting thousands of frontline healthcare jobs across Missouri at a time when we need them most.
  • It helps keep rural hospitals open (10 closed since 2014).
  • Brings more than a billion of our tax dollars home from Washington each year, rather than going to other states including California and New York.

On June 12, the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry endorsed Medicaid Expansion and hailed the ballot initiative as a “pro-jobs measure that will help fuel economic growth throughout our state.”
It has also been endorsed in Missouri by AARP, League of Women Voters and Progress Women.

More information is available at: https://www.healthcareformissouri.org

Please be aware of the mail-in voting option for the both August and November elections.

If you would like to work with Metropolitan Congregations United to educate others about Medicaid Expansion and to get out the vote (virtual phone banking), please contact Bob Karr ( [email protected]).
