Dear Winnetka Parents,

There are so many amazing resources in District 36 that sometimes it can be difficult to keep them all straight. We wanted to give you a quick overview of our NEW District website so that you can become familiar with all that is offered. Here is the  link . When you get to the home page it looks like:

*For up to date information on Redistricting or the Educational Master Facility Plan (EMFP), click on the "District" button above the Winnetka logo. The "District" section also contains links to various departments and the School Board.

*The calendars tab will provide each school's events dates as well as District dates. Please check these before calling schools for information.  With the new website, your calendar view is now customizable.

*Under the Parents drop-down, you can find many links including PTO websites, forms, the Winnetka Public Schools Foundation, and a principal favorite, the Winnetka Parent Institute warehouse of videos of past presentations.

Crow Island News:

Dear Crow Island Families,

I was excited to return to school on Wednesday after my German adventure last week.  As a reminder,I was invited to be a guest of VS America (the furniture company that donated our furniture) at their North American Days at their factory outside of Frankfurt.  This event offered presentations, panels and workshops to international leaders in the fields of architecture, design and education. I participated in two panel conversations entitled Architecture Lessons from Crow Island:  A Modern Masterpiece of Design for Children. Although I am aware of the architectural significance of our school, I was blown away by the genuine interest, appreciation and respect that this group of professionals has for our school, our educational philosophy and how the two fit together. I was proud to share about Crow Island, its design and our pedagogical and curricular practices with people from all over the United States, Canada, China, Australia and more.  It was an honor to represent the Crow Island community at this event and I look forward to continuing conversations with many of the experts with whom I connected.

Have a wonderful week!

Julie

Redistricting 2020

After three years of evaluating redistricting scenarios, The Winnetka Public Schools Board has narrowed the  Redistricting options under consideration to three. The options were presented to the Board on August 26, 2019 by Cropper GIS, a demographer working with the District since 2016. New attendance boundaries will be implemented in August 2020.

The School Board has asked for the community to complete a  feedback form  (by September 10) before a final recommendation for Redistricting is made at the School Board Meeting on September 24, 2019. To access the form,  click here or visit the  District website.

Community members who live in areas under consideration for Redistricting will be notified via U.S. mail this week. Additional information and  maps of the Redistricting options are available on the  District website and a  community mailing was sent to all households in Winnetka the week of August 18.

At the August 26 Meeting, the School Board also affirmed its commitment to the District's Educational Master Facility Plan, which includes (3) K-4 elementary schools and moving grades 5-8 to Washburne School by 2023. The Board also began discussions on "phasing-in." Phasing-in allows a subset of students to remain at their current elementary school AFTER new boundary lines go into effect.  On August 26, 2019, the School Board agreed to phase-in students from the Crow Island area who will be in fourth grade in 2020-2021. They also agreed that any new student enrolling for the 2020-2021 school year will be required to attend their newly assigned school. The Board will continue discussions regarding phasing-in other groups of students at the September 24, 2019, meeting.

Community members are invited to attend the following upcoming meetings:

7:15 p.m. at Greeley School

The School Board will approve the plan for Redistricting 2020. New attendance boundaries and "phase in" accommodations will be approved at this meeting.

Safely Crossing Green Bay Road During Bridge Construction

The Village of Winnetka is in the midst of bridge repair work at the intersections of Cherry Street/Green Bay Road and Oak Street/Green Bay Road, with completion anticipated in November 2019.  For students traveling to school through these areas, the Village and Police recommend that the safest area for students to cross Green Bay Road is the pedestrian signal at Elm Street and Green Bay Road. It is advised that students walk their bikes while crossing Green Bay Road.

As always, please ensure that students biking or scootering to school are wearing helmets. It is recommended to remind students who are walking or biking to school to obey traffic signals and street signs and look both ways as they are riding to and from school, especially in the "tree streets" areas where some intersections do not have four-way stops.
