Collaborate with us on the Green Team Project!

The Coalition is collaborating with the Canadian Association of Nurses for the Environment (CANE) and University of Alberta graduate student, Joanna Law, to create a national picture of green teams.
The goal of this project is to develop an interactive map that will display Green Team location and information from across the country. Its aim is to inform and inspire those looking to start a green team and provide networking opportunities for existing green teams.

We are looking for your help in realizing this project. If you have a green team and would like to be included in this project, we kindly request your participation in any of the following ways:

  • Provide us with a summary of your green team activities and future direction.
  • Provide us with contact information that could be posted on the map.
  • Provide us with information about a specific success, difficulty, or experience in being part of a green team. This could take the form of a short written piece, video vignette, email interview, or video interview.

Please contact our project lead, Joanna Law, if you are able to participate to any degree in this project or have any questions or concerns.

Joanna can be reached by email at jrl@ualberta.ca

Electrifying the transportation grid

Kent Waddington, Communications Director at the Coalition has an amazing article on "Electrifying the transportation grid" in the upcoming spring edition of the CHES journal.

Here is an early peek into the article! This informative piece explores the benefits and challenges of EV charger installation while taking into account some site-specific cases.
FACILITY MANAGEMENT
A healthier planet starts with hospitals

While hospitals are dedicated to healing, they are some of the most resource-intensive buildings on the planet. On average, they use twice the energy of most other building types. Given that these large and complex facilities much operate 24/7, it is obvious that this leads to intense energy use compared to typical buildings. This article explores eleven key strategies to reduce energy use and foster sustainable health care systems.
How hospital design can save lives

Despite its name, an emergency room isn’t necessarily the fastest way for patients to enter a hospital, depending on the facility’s layout, capacity and flow. For some patients, time is of the essence. The time spent during check-in and in the waiting room could be critical moments that make the difference between life and death. This article elaborates more on how hospital buildings must adapt to growing populations, new medical paradigms and evolving building code requirements to ultimately save lives.
Climate Change Resources
The Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care has the resources you need to help your facility take action on climate change.
COVID-19
Advice for hospital EVS staff on preparing for a pandemic

An essential base of knowledge must be obtained and sustained to enable good decision-making during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Environmental services (EVS) professionals can consider maintaining membership in the Association for the Health Care Environment (AHE) to stay up to date on rapidly changing data and evidence-based processes. This article provides guidance from the AHE to help keep members up to date.

Be sure to explore the infection control training for front line health care workers: Project Firstline

Project Firstline is a CDC national training collaborative offering timely infection control training to front line health care workers and the public health workforce in the fight against infectious disease threats. As a key partner in this initiative, the American Hospital Association (AHA) is helping bring this critical training opportunity to the health care field and champion sound decision-making and positive behaviours in a time of crisis.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES
Canadian EV charging networks post double-digit growth since start of pandemic

There are more EV charging stations out there! The latest tally of Canadian charging network deployments shows a 22 per cent increase in fast-charger installations since last March. Despite a rough 10 months, there are now fewer gaps in Canada’s EV infrastructure. Does you site have the infrastructure to support EV charging? Read the full article to learn of various EV charging stations and infrastructure across Canada.
New Nova Scotia EV rebate draws praise for making the transition to ZEVs inclusive

Nova Scotia joined the ranks of provinces offering incentives for electric vehicle purchases. Premier Iain Rankin announced the incentives would come from a $19-million dollar fund and the purchase incentives would extend from passenger vehicles to electric bicycles and used vehicle purchases. In total, $9.5 million dollars from the fund will be used to finance the rebate program. Is your hospital EV ready yet?

PLASTIC WASTE
Why hospitals are beginning to reuse or recycle oxygen masks, IV bags, surgical tools they used to throw out

Safely reusing medical equipment that has been previously used by doctors or patients can help hospitals save on health care costs, prevent supply shortages and have beneficial knock-on effects for the whole population, say some doctors. It could also potentially make a dent in the mountains of hospital waste generated each year. In Canada alone, non-hazardous hospital waste could amount to nearly 300 tonnes a day. Dr. Andrea MacNeill, a surgical oncologist at Vancouver General Hospital is one of several doctors across Canada trying to make the shift from the single-use and disposable equipment hospitals rely on to more reusable masks, gowns and surgical supplies.
Canada is drowning in plastic waste — and recycling won't save us

Recently, the federal government announced plans for a national waste strategy that would list plastics as toxic under Schedule 1 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) and a ban on some single-use plastics. Most importantly, the plan calls for a new “circular economy” that would rely on massively scaling up existing recycling facilities and still-nascent recycling technologies to keep disposable plastic ubiquitous in our daily lives. Read further in this article to find out more about how useful recycling is, what the barriers to recycling are, and how we could potentially overcome these challenges.
