Collaborate with us on the Green Team Project!
The Coalition is collaborating with the Canadian Association of Nurses for the Environment (CANE) and University of Alberta graduate student, Joanna Law, to create a national picture of green teams.
The goal of this project is to develop an interactive map that will display Green Team location and information from across the country. Its aim is to inform and inspire those looking to start a green team and provide networking opportunities for existing green teams.
We are looking for your help in realizing this project. If you have a green team and would like to be included in this project, we kindly request your participation in any of the following ways:
- Provide us with a summary of your green team activities and future direction.
- Provide us with contact information that could be posted on the map.
- Provide us with information about a specific success, difficulty, or experience in being part of a green team. This could take the form of a short written piece, video vignette, email interview, or video interview.
Please contact our project lead, Joanna Law, if you are able to participate to any degree in this project or have any questions or concerns.

Canadian EV charging networks post double-digit growth since start of pandemic
There are more EV charging stations out there! The latest tally of Canadian charging network deployments shows a 22 per cent increase in fast-charger installations since last March. New Nova Scotia EV rebate draws praise for making the transition to ZEVs inclusive
Nova Scotia joined the ranks of provinces offering incentives for electric vehicle purchases. Premier Iain Rankin announced the incentives would come from a $19-million dollar fund and the purchase incentives would extend from passenger vehicles to electric bicycles and used vehicle purchases. In total, $9.5 million dollars from the fund will be used to finance the rebate program. Is your hospital EV ready yet?

Why hospitals are beginning to reuse or recycle oxygen masks, IV bags, surgical tools they used to throw out
Safely reusing medical equipment that has been previously used by doctors or patients can help hospitals save on health care costs, prevent supply shortages and have beneficial knock-on effects for the whole population, say some doctors. It could also potentially make a dent in the mountains of hospital waste generated each year. In Canada alone, non-hazardous hospital waste could amount to nearly 300 tonnes a day. Dr. Andrea MacNeill, a surgical oncologist at Vancouver General Hospital is one of several doctors across Canada trying to make the shift from the single-use and disposable equipment hospitals rely on to more reusable masks, gowns and surgical supplies.

Canada is drowning in plastic waste — and recycling won't save us
Recently, the federal government announced plans for a national waste strategy that would list plastics as toxic under Schedule 1 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) and a ban on some single-use plastics. Most importantly, the plan calls for a new “circular economy” that would rely on massively scaling up existing recycling facilities and still-nascent recycling technologies to keep disposable plastic ubiquitous in our daily lives. CHES is seeking nominations for the 2021 awards. Members are reminded to nominate a deserving member or facility for one of these prestigious awards.
Hans Burgers Award for Outstanding Contribution to Healthcare Engineering
This award is presented to a resident of Canada as a mark of recognition of outstanding achievement in the field of health care engineering. Candidates must be members of CHES and the achievements can be either a series of contributions or one outstanding contribution.
Wayne McLellan Award of Excellence in Healthcare Facilities Management
This award recognizes facilities that have had outstanding success in the completion of a major capital project, an energy efficiency program, an environmental stewardship program, or in a team building exercise.
