Happy New Year to you and your family! As the new year begins, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the past year and how your support allowed us to achieve more than ever. Each year Casas de Luz grows as experienced builders and new builders join to expand our community both in San Diego and in Tijuana.

This past year we built more houses than ever, started new programs, stayed in new accommodation, welcomed new leaders on to our leadership team, and so much more. We hope to make 2020 an even bigger and better year as we celebrate our 15th anniversary.

We wish you and your family nothing but the best for the new year of 2020. May it be a year filled with love, happiness and health. Cheers to another great year!
December Builds
December 7, 8
This build we had some new build attire - ponchos! Between downpours, this team worked hard to get the house up and roof on in time for the Aguayo family of 16 to have a roof to keep them dry and warm on Saturday night.
December 14, 15
We were so happy to be able to provide the Garcia family with a warm home to spend the holidays and the upcoming rainy season in. Both their home and the Aguayo family's homes burnt down during the fire season this past year.
December 28, 29
We partnered with Faro de Luz to build a warm, clean room for 11 year old Debora, who suffers from leukemia. It was an amazing build of different groups coming together to support Debora and her recovery.
2020 Statistics
Record Year
In 2019 we built a total of 26 houses, allowing more than 130 family members to have a beautiful house to come home to! We welcomed two new master carpenters to our team, and provided more than 100 bags of groceries to more than a dozen families.Thank you for allowing us to reach these numbers and we can't wait to see what 2020 brings!
Despensas de Luz
Holiday Despensas
Our holiday despensa program of December was a huge success! Every family at our Faro de Luz community center received groceries for the holiday season thanks to the generosity of our sponsors. Thank you for allowing so many families to enjoy a Christmas dinner.
Three King's Day Parties
Cumbres
Our annual holiday party at our Cumbres community center was so much fun! We had our usual piñata fun filled with all of the candy from our Halloween candy drive. The kids love trying American candy, it is different from what they are used to! The whole community enjoyed singing, playing games, and receiving and giving presents along with high school students and leaders from San Diego. Every year we see the growth in this community center, as its new building finds new uses and invites new members to become a part of the community.
Faro de Luz
Dozens of kids poured participated in the holiday party at Faro de Luz, we even had special guests from Catherine's Kids (read below)! High school leaders led different games, including the all-time favorite of donut on a string, decorating (and eating) cookies, and the final event of giving out gifts! Thanks to several donors, each child received a pillow pet as well as a brand new toy. Families left the party with their stockings full and big smiles on their faces!
Partnership
Catherine's Kids
Catherine's Kids is an organization that provides a nurturing home for abandoned special needs children in Baja California. Our Faro de Luz community center has made several trips to visit the children at Catherine's where they have made beautiful friendships while playing, bouncing on the trampoline, and cooking for them. While they visit Catherine's, both organization's staff are able to share in their successes and barriers to providing hope for both communities. As a result, Catherine's Kids donated gifts for 60 children for the Faro de Luz holiday party on January 12! Quite a few friends from Catherine's even came to join in on the fun and experience the greater Faro de Luz community. The kids at Catherine's were excited to be able to say thank you for all of the love and time community members spend with them, and they were so happy they were able to provide gifts!
Family Testimonial
April 2018
"The experience of receiving a house was an answer to my prayers. We are so happy because we now have a roof under which we can be with our children. Our new home has allowed us to have our own space to have more time as a family, especially because we used to live with my mother. It’s so special to be able to have your own home in your house." - Alma
Donations
Donation Spotlight: Windows
With a year filled with builds from new and returning teams, we are in need of windows! As part of our re-purposing with a purpose program, donated windows give each home their own style and keep our costs low all while keeping them out of the landfills. If you or someone you know is re-modeling their home or replacing windows, let us know! We would love to take them off your hands.
Donation Sheds at St. James Catholic Church
Sheds are at the end of the parking lot of the church if coming from the North. If you are coming from the South, take Via de la Valle and drive towards the ocean. On Del Mar Downs Road, turn right and continue until the end of the road where you will turn left. Drive left up the hill and the sheds will be on your left! There is a rope protecting our sheds from being a dump zone, so feel free to drop off your    usable  donations right there!   Please contact us so we know to expect it!
