 Arctic Cruise Raises Hopes and Environmental Concerns.
Sue and Jay Pendleton were booked on an Antarctic trip when something more enticing came along: a luxury cruise through the once impassable Northwest Passage.
They canceled their plans and paid $90,000 for the
Crystal Serenity's voyage above the North American continent.
"This to us was kind of a bucket list thing," Mrs. Pendleton said. "I'd love to see a walrus before I die."

Nunavut Mine Needs Improved Monitoring, Public Oversight: WWF.
Nunavut's Mary River iron mine could be a strong example of sustainable development in the Arctic, says World Wildlife Foundation-Canada, but it's lacking the public oversight it needs to achieve that.
The Baffinland Iron Mines Corp. mine,
which shipped its first load of iron ore to Europe in 2015, released its 2015 annual report this past spring, offering a 111-page breakdown of the mine's performance and monitoring programs in 2015 and plans for 2016.

Dear Colleague Letter- Seeking Community Input on NSF Polar Program Realignment. The National Science Foundation (NSF) is currently conducting a review of the position of the Division of Polar Programs within the Directorate for the Geosciences (GEO). Prior to 2013, the Office of Polar Programs (OPP) operated within NSF's Office of the Director. In 2013, NSF realigned several functions, including positioning OPP within the Directorate for the Geosciences (GEO) as the Division of Polar Programs (PLR). The mission of the enterprise was not changed. Now that we have several years of experience in this new configuration, NSF is conducting this review. The review process is meant to be forward-looking and data driven. Input from the science and engineering research community is an important component of the review process, and we seek your comments and thoughts.

TOW Arctic Broadband Summit, July 13, 2016 (Barrow, Alaska, USA).
 The Arctic Economic Council, the Iñuit Arctic Business Alliance and the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation will host this event. Summit topics include the challenges of connectivity; the government's role in, and commitment to,
broadband development; and, private investment opportunities. Policy leaders, regulators, other government officials, along with industry experts and executives have been invited to present and attend.

13th International Conference on Gas in Marine Sediments: September 19-22, 2016 (Tromso, Norway).
GIMS 13
promotes the study of natural gas and release systems on a global scale and
facilitates interdisciplinary and international cooperation. The conference
intends to bring together geologists, biologists, microbiologist, geophysicists, oceanographers, geochemists and scientists from modeling disciplines. The forum will provide a platform for current knowledge and future programs in gas inventories, fluxes and their role within the carbon cycle and biodiversity. Bridging the Future of Arctic Social Science Research, September 23-24, 2016 (Monticello, Virginia, USA).
The event is sponsored by Arctic Horizons. The event will reassemble the members of the National Steering Committee and a small but diverse selection of representatives from the five regional workshops, to total about 15 people. The aim will be to identify and synthesize the core threads of the previous workshops and public contributions proffered between workshops. The target output for the workshop will be a final report draft and outline of steps leading to the final report release in June 2016. The Jefferson Institute will manage production of the publication.
