International Spotlight:
Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins
"The global community is facing many challenges that require nations to work together, whether that challenge is climate change, infectious disease, food and water security, or cybersecurity. At WCAPS, we believe global issues demand a variety of perspectives. That is why we created a platform devoted to women of color that cultivate a strong voice and network for its members while encouraging dialogue and strategies for engaging in policy discussions on an international scale. Likewise, as a Steering Committee Member for the Patricia Roberts Harris Public Affairs (PRH) Fellowship, it has been a pleasure to engage with passionate young change makers who recognize the importance of public affairs in our changing world.

When I worked at the Department of State, I was part of the launch of the Global Health Security Agenda, which is an effort to strengthen the capacity of nations to prevent, detect and respond to infectious disease threats. We realized from the start of that effort that to be successful, we needed to bring together individuals with expertise in many areas. It is therefore important that students understand this connection while in school and appreciate the need to work across disciplines. As such, I encourage students to apply for the PRH Fellowship, where they have access to mentorship, professional development workshops, and leadership opportunities that will truly help them understand how to leverage their abilities and create a positive global impact. If you are a student interested in public affairs, definitely take advantage of opportunities to develop expertise in your field so you too can contribute to creating a more just and safe world!" -Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins
Ambassador Jenkins is the Founder of Women of Color Advancing Peace and Security (WCAPS), and a Steering Committee Member of the Patricia Roberts Harris Public Affairs Fellowship.
Summer Highlight:
Rangel Summer Enrichment Program
Each summer, Howard University and the Bunche Center host undergraduate students from around the country for a six-week intensive enrichment program focused on pursuing careers in international affairs. Although students were unable to travel to Washington, D.C. this year, the Rangel Summer Enrichment Program successfully concluded its first virtual program for 15 students from 15 universities.

During the closing ceremony on July 24, 2020, each scholar shared with their fellow scholars, family, and visitors, the profound impact the program had on their personal and professional development. Rangel Program Deputy Director Bunmi Akinnusotu, reflects, "The 2020 Rangel Scholars were a special group. They persevered through uncertainty and supported each other through an intense 6 weeks of professional development. They are well on their way to becoming outstanding international affairs leaders."

Howard University was represented in this year's cohort as well! Senior Bison, Virgil Parker, shared, "I am still very honored to have been selected as a Charles B. Rangel Scholar for the summer of 2020. This incredible program not only exposed me to a variety of opportunities in the world of international affairs, but it also taught me that minorities - especially people of color - must be included in the representation of America's global voice."

The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) is a six-week summer program designed to provide undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. The Program usually selects participants (known as “Rangel Scholars”) each year from universities throughout the United States. This program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, women, and those with financial need.
Catching Up With Bison
Summer 2020 has been one like no other! Despite the impacts of COVID-19, Howard University students continued to develop professionally and academically as future leaders. We caught up with a couple of Bison who are part of the Bunche Center family:
"It’s been a long summer balancing between trying to stay safe by self-isolating and still enjoying the world around me! I had the opportunity to be a Woke Vote Fellow and learn about community organizing and voter education. I also had the chance to dedicate more time to Brighter Lives BTL, a nonprofit I founded with my friends to address lack of access across education, politics, economics, and other areas. With the COVID-19 pandemic and the racial and social injustices we’ve seen this summer, it really gave me more perspective of the world we live in. Now more than ever, we need to learn about and be actively involved with other cultures and other people in order to approach situations respectfully and equitably. I’m excited to continue volunteering at the RBC this Fall, and contribute to the innovation and creativity necessary to continue the Howard community." -Darrica Mann

Darrica is a graduating Senior studying Community Development, and an active member of the Bunche Brigade.
"Spain is an absolutely beautiful place. The people are very nice, the cities are incredibly clean, and the culture is a great one to be immersed in. The music, dancing, food, art, and traditions made my time abroad very worthwhile. I was sad to be sent home so abruptly (6 weeks into my 15 week program). The city of Madrid had already canceled school for a 15-day period due to rising case numbers. Two days after that, a few hours after the President imposed a 30-day travel ban from all European countries, my Spanish academic director cancelled our program and ordered us all to be sent back home to be safe. It was heartbreaking to have to say goodbye to my host family and all my new friends.

I have been home in Virginia ever since. I'm grateful to say that lockdown/quarantine has been pretty pleasant here with my family for the last 5 months. I am back to working now and am excited to start back up at school and volunteering at the Bunche Center. Not only am I looking forward to seeing everyone again, but also engaging with our international education events and promoting global opportunities. There is important work to be done that will hopefully establish a sense of normalcy for all of us and I cant wait!" -Nadia Greene

Nadia is a Senior, International Affairs Major. She served as the Bunche Brigade President during the Fall 2019 semester studied abroad in Madrid, Spain, during Spring 2020.

Support the Patricia Roberts Harris Public Affairs Fellowship Today!
The PRH Fellows blazed through the summer! Nearly every fellow, in the first cohort since the relaunching of the PRH Fellowship last year, successfully obtained a summer internship despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

They have also continued with their monthly professional development workshops virtually. Over the past two months, the Fellows have heard from guest speakers Zakiya Carr-Johnson, founder of Black Women Disrupt, and Dr. Kanton Reynolds of NC State. Together, they’ve dissected some of today’s current issues and supported each other along the way!
