All CCSD93 Students Receive Common Messages of Acceptance or Finding Their Voice with #ReadAloudIn93
|
| At CCSD93, we want every child to feel welcome in our schools, to know that they belong, and to understand that they have a unique perspective and voice that deserves to be heard. Without this type of open and accepting learning environment, students simply cannot thrive, and CCSD93 would not be able to achieve its mission of maximizing the academic, social, and emotional potential of each child. |

To help reinforce this positive atmosphere, by the end of this month, every preschool and elementary student will have participated in a classroom read aloud of the book All Are Welcome, by Alexandra Penfold and Suzanne Kaufman, while all middle school students will read aloud Say Something, by Peter H. Reynolds, with their ELA classes. The preschool and elementary book focuses on acceptance and celebration of one another's heritages and unique traits, skills, and abilities. The middle school book encourages students to find their own voice through any number of methods and to speak loudly, boldly, and undeterred.
By utilizing effective read aloud practices, including selectively pausing for conversation and incorporating additional related texts throughout a number of days or weeks, CCSD93's teachers are engaging students to think about and discuss the books' essential themes in meaningful ways. Many are even using the read alouds to springboard into lessons that delve deeper into the book themes as seen here.

I'm so pleased all of our students have been able to delve into the messages of these texts. We will continue to seek ways to celebrate our increasingly diverse learning community and foster supportive learning environments this year and into the future.

Parents Invited to Learn More About Dangers of Vaping on 10/2
|

Recent reports link serious respiratory problems and even fatalities to the use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices. With the Food and Drug Administration citing a recent study that use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices has increased by 50% among middle schoolers since last year, it's essential that students and parents fully understand the dangers of these products.
All community members are invited to join Community Consolidated School District 93, the Carol Stream Police Department, Northwestern Medicine, the Prevention Leadership Team (DuPage County Health Department's substance use prevention coalition), and the Carol Stream Park District for a free presentation for parents on the Dangers of Adolescent Vaping at 7 p.m. on October 2 at Fountain View Recreation Center in Carol Stream. Attendees will learn crucial information regarding health effects of vaping devices, what they can contain, how to spot them, and what the law says about their use. They'll also have the chance to ask questions of local police, medical, health, and school experts. Can't make it in person? Watch live at www.facebook.com/CCSD93.

Carol Stream Superhero Students Surprised with Shoes

As shared a few weeks ago, CCSD93's elementary schools are partnering with the Carol Stream Police Department, Unity Partnership, and Super Heroic to give away shoes to specially selected superhero students. In addition to providing some pretty awesome superhero-themed shoes, the program helps to foster positive relationships between students and police officers. More FREE Glenbard Upcoming Parent Series Presentations!
|
Glenbard Parent Series (GPS) is an ongoing series of free workshops and presentations geared toward helping adults navigate parenthood in modern times. They're terrific resources for our community, and even though it has Glenbard in its name, CCSD93 parents with or without students in high school absolutely are invited to attend. Check out the GPS programming scheduled throughout the next week that you may find valuable.

9/19 Board of Education Meeting Recap
|
CCSD93's most recent Board of Education meeting took place Thursday, September 19 at Western Trails School. The following are among the agenda items.
- Western Trails School students led the Board in a Climate & Culture Circle, which is a type of strategy used at Western Trails to build community, solve problems, and learn collaboratively. Here's a photo of the Circle!
- There was a public hearing and vote to adopt CCSD93's 2019-20 Budget.
- Dr. Hill updated the Board on progress the District is making to achieve the Board's goals.
- There was a presentation on CCSD93's safety drills by CCSD93 Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Cathy Brennan.
- The Board reviewed the Administrative, Non-Administrative, and IMRF compensation reports before they are published to CCSD93's website.
- There were four revised Board Policies for first reading:
- 270.19 - Public Participation at School Board Meetings & Petitions to the Board
- 410.30 - Insufficient Fund Checks
- 465.04 - Emergency Plans
- 500.03 - Job Descriptions
