This is one of the most exciting weeks of the 1st quarter as we have several special events converging all at once.
In addition to the continuation of Hispanic Heritage Month, on Monday our fall book fair gets underway (books always make great gifts!) and then on Tuesday and Thursday we are opening up the campus for our annual Open House (details below; days vary by grade level). Both of our winning soccer teams will also round out the regular season this week, but will do so away on the opposition's fields.
Please remember that this Wednesday, September 25th we will be conducting one of our after-school enrichment sessions from 3:05 pm to 4:05 pm. As we just released 1st quarter progress reports, if your student needs any extra help, please take advantage of this program at this time.
If you have a student at Lake Nona, please make every effort to attend Open House on the appropriate night this week. We want all of our parents and guardians to meet their child's teachers and see the campus.

Scholastic Book Fair (Sept. 23-37)
This week we will be welcoming the Scholastic Book Fair to the LNMS Media Center. The fair will begin on September 23rd and run through September 27th .The fair will be open before school and after school as well as during the school day. Students will also have the opportunity to visit during their language arts classes.
LNMS accepts cash and credit and debit cards during the fair. In addition, the EWallet option allows parents/guardians to load funds onto an account for their students to access at school during the fair. The link to access the Ewallet can be found on the school website and the Scholastic webpage for our fair. You can also visit our fair webpage at this address -
http://www.scholastic.com/bf/lakenonamiddleschool - from there, parents can access the Ewallet and add funds.
Online shopping is also available. There are thousands more products available through the online fair. Any products purchased will be shipped to the school at the conclusion of the fair. All purchases go towards supporting the LNMS Media Center and it's programs.
The fair will also be open during Open House on September 24th and September 26th. We will partner with the LNMS PTSA to offer an incentive for new memberships. Any parent or guardian who joins PTSA at the cost of $10.00 will have their student's name entered in a drawing for a $20.00 gift certificate to the fair.
The PTSA will have a table set up in the media center that evening. At the table you will be able to join by paying cash, check, or online. The discount cards will also be available at the table. The winner will be announced during lunch the next day. The winning student will be able to come to the fair at lunch and spend their gift certificate.
SSYRA Program Update
The SSYRA Reward Card Program is the main reading reward program which is run through the media center. Students are eligible for the card when they read 3 SSYRA (Sunshine State Young Readers Award) books and pass the test on each book. During the year there are special activities and rewards which come with having the card.

Knight Scientist-in-Residence

Nemour's scientist, Jeanne Brooks, recently worked with students in the Project Leads the Way (PLTW) classrooms with teacher, Ms. Colon. She will be working with our students one day each month.

This time students had to design a question that could be researched through the principles of the scientific method; a general continuous process that includes observations about the natural world.
Some of the questions students wanted to investigate were as follows:
- Does certain colors affect people's emotions?
- What would survive better if left in the wild, a cat or a dog?
- Why does milk spoil?
- How long can a person stay up without needing to sleep?
- Does the amount of light affect the quality of the reflection on a mirror?
About Jeanne Brooks:
I earned a Master's degree in genetics from Georgia State University and a Bachelor's degree in Biology with an emphasis in biotechnology from The University of Missouri. I have worked in a variety of labs and have a diverse research background; including studying hepatitis C virus, DNA and RNA expression, type II diabetes, and helping to develop cell lines for pharmaceutical companies.
I currently work as a scientist at Nemours; our lab focuses on pediatric cancers and oncolytic viruses. I'm also a part-time biology professor at Valencia College.

Awesome work Mr. Perez Valentine!
Our own custodian,
Gabriel Perez Valentine, is a fine art painter and has been using his talents to design and paint our Knight logo on the wall in the 6th grade hall-way.
He has painted the Knight low to the ground so our smaller 6th grade Knights can focus on the mural as they transition to their classes. We look forward to his next project in the 7th grade hall-way!

Monitoring Skyward Family Access Usage
Note: The number of LNMS parents/guardians that accessed the new Skyward Student Information System this past week fell to 8.3% from 8.8%.

We have a new club, sponsored by Coach Stoeckigt - "Sustainability Club"
 During a time when the sea levels are rising, honey bees are endangered, the Amazon Rainforest is on fire, the coral reefs are dying, and plastic can be found in rainwater, sustainability has become of critical importance. Sustainability is the ability of our generation to meet its needs without compromising the needs of future generations.
This is a club that focuses on creating a mindfulness of daily habits in order to make changes toward positive alternatives. As individuals, we will draw attention to things like fashion, food, make-up, travel, wildlife, gardening and many other interests to lessen our impact.
Using the information we share and discover, we will help to make our fellow students and teachers more aware of ways they can make changes starting at school. Examples include avoiding single-use plastic (such as bringing a reusable water bottle) and better understanding of what can be recycled and where to recycle.
As a part of OCPS's sustainability initiative, we will participate in the Green School Recognition Plan. Together we will find ways to improve our resource conservation, enhance school grounds, increase health and well being, and become more involved in our community.

Lake Nona Knights soccer is on a role after two more victories this past week!
Our Lady Knights remain undefeated! They breezed through South Creek at home on Monday with a final score of 3-1 and then traveled to Walker on Wednesday where they had another close game. Walker had height and speed, but our girls did not let that intimate them. Being the more skilled and well-rounded team our girls persevered and beat them in penalty kicks. The score was 2-2 at the end of overtime with our girls coming out on top once again in penalty kicks.
Boys soccer has won their third straight game and have really picked up their momentum. They defeated South Creek 4-0 and Walker 1-0. Though the score was close against Walker, our gentlemen had possession of the ball most of the game - just had a difficult time converting as Walker had a very good defense. The single goal from our Knights came from
Javier Ortega. We have had outstanding defense from
Christian Saclemente, Eduardo Abraham, and
Franco Montes.
The Knights play two crucial games next week to finish out their regular season. Monday we play at Meadow Woods starting at 5:30 pm and Wednesday vs Hunter's Creek at 5pm.

AAHC Student Achievers Awards
|
The Asian American Heritage Council of Central Florida (AAHC) is proud to announce the Student Achievers Awards.
This award is for qualified and deserving Asian American students who can participate in a competition for scholastic awards based on their academic achievements and notable community service -
application on website here. The competition is open to all elementary, middle school, and high school students.
The AAHC Student Achievers Awards Application Form states the participation criteria and lists the required documentation. All entries must be mailed to:
