ICYMI: Funding available for projects to address tobacco disparities; Aug. 18 deadline
Applications for the Innovation to Reduce Tobacco Disparities Request for Proposals are due by 5 p.m. Aug. 18. While tobacco use across the United States has declined dramatically in the last two decades, our region lags behind. The RFP seeks applicants to plan and implement community-led pilot projects focused on reducing tobacco disparities for adults with lower incomes, rural communities and African American adults. Join the All-in Cincinnati Coalition for its next online meeting, 3-5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27. All-In Cincinnati aims to deepen, amplify and multiply local and regional efforts to build equitable, thriving neighborhoods. It is supported by Interact for Health, the Greater Cincinnati Foundation and United Way of Greater Cincinnati. Hamilton County Public Health receives national award
Congratulations to our partners at Hamilton County Public Health, which was recently honored with the 2020 Promising Practice Award by the National Association of County and City Health Officials. The award celebrates local health departments for developing programs that demonstrate exciting approaches and strategies to local public health issues. The health department's Narcan® Distribution Collaborative, in partnership with BrightView, was one of 36 programs to receive the award. This work is supported by Interact for Health. Learn more.
Policy forum to focus on children's health; registration for Sept. 21 webinar now open
The Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky's 2020 Howard L. Bost Memorial Health Policy Forum will highlight policies and programs that reduce the chances of disease and unhealthy behaviors that often begin in childhood, including substance use, suicide and vaping. This year the forum will be a series of five monthly one-hour webinars. The first will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21. Register here.
Registration open for OneSource fundraising webinar Aug. 20
The OneSource Center for Nonprofit Excellence will present its "New Fundraising Possibilities: Exploring Virtual and Hybrid Platforms" webinar from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20. Participants will learn tips and strategies for fundraising options and hear from panelists who have recently had a successful virtual event or worked through details of planning a transformed fundraising experience.

DRUG USE: FDA tells doctors to discuss overdose reversal drug with patients
Doctors who prescribe opioid painkillers should tell their patients about a potentially life-saving medication that can reverse drug overdoses, according to new federal guidelines (Associated Press, 7/23). The move by the Food and Drug Administration is the latest government effort to increase use of the drug naloxone, best known by the brand name Narcan. Read the AP article.
HEALTH EQUITY: CDC vows to address COVID disparities
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a strategy aimed at improving health outcomes for populations disproportionately affected by COVID-19 (CDC, 7/24). This includes building on plans for better data on testing, incidence, vaccination and severe outcomes by race and ethnicity as well as establishing special studies related to social determinants of health. The strategy will also focus on increased testing, contact tracing, isolation options and preventive care and disease management in populations at increased risk. Read the CDC strategy statement.
DRUG USE: Hamilton County coalition issues overdose alert
Drug overdoses are spiking again in Hamilton County in what appears to be a fluctuating pattern in the region since the coronavirus pandemic started (DeMio, Cincinnati Enquirer, 7/30). The Hamilton County Addiction Response Coalition issued an overdose alert warning of an overdose surge in hospital emergency departments in the last couple of weeks. The coalition tracks suspected overdose admissions to the emergency rooms and 911 calls for emergency responders each day through Hamilton County Public Health. Read the Cincinnati Enquirer article.
CHILDREN’S HEALTH: Groups unite to urge food aid to schoolchildren during pandemic
A coalition of educators, activists and philanthropists is urging Congress to extend and expand emergency provisions that allow school districts nationwide to feed millions of children during the coronavirus pandemic (Kennedy, Associated Press, 7/30). Advocates, which include the American Federation of Teachers and the NAACP, are seeking a 15% increase in food stamp assistance and an extension of the program that allows children who are eligible for free or reduced-price meals at school to get extra food benefits.
