We continue to be inspired by our colleagues during this new reality. In many ways we have built stronger connections with each of you in the past three months than ever before. Many thanks for your participation in our educational technology workshops and virtual support sessions. Our Online Teaching Fundamentals micro course had 189 faculty participate and our Decolonizing and Indigenizing Curriculum micro course had 70 faculty participate. We learn by doing, which fundamentally means learning from each other and building a supportive community of learners: a key goal of the CTE. We have several workshops planned throughout June. Please see details below.

We are pleased to introduce you to a few firsts for the CTE: 

  • Student Digital Ambassadors
  • Decolonization and Indigenization Support and Resources 
Capilano Student Digital Ambassadors 

The Student Digital Ambassadors will provide peer-to-peer support for students navigating the online environment and the educational technology tools used at Capilano. The Ambassadors have received training and mentoring from the CTE.
  
Our ambassadors will support students in navigating the online learning environment principally in the following ways: 

  • Providing weekly virtual student peer-to-peer support for online learning and use of educational technology tools 
  • Assisting our Educational Developers in creating educational technology resources for students 
  • Supporting students with uploading assignments, using MS Teams or WebEx for presentations, or using other educational technology resources such as Kaltura video and eLearn  

Ambassadors will be available virtually in Teams.

Over the next several months, the CTE will be exploring various themes that seek to enable and promote the decolonization and Indigenization of educators, curriculum, and ultimately the institution in its Newsletter.

Each CTE newsletter will feature a Decolonizing and Indigenizing Resources section, which will be broken into weekly resources to watch, listen to, and read for all aspiring allies.  

You are encouraged to connect with other aspiring allies throughout the month and join the virtual monthly Aspiring Allies Gathering. At the monthly virtual gathering, aspiring allies will have an opportunity to engage with the weekly decolonizing and Indigenizing resources and support each other as aspiring allies.

Student Success in Online Learning Environments 
Students, like their instructors, may have experienced challenges along with successes in adapting to teaching and learning in an online environment. Listed below are a few resources that you may consider sharing with your students to assist them in making the transition from a face-to-face to an online learning classroom.

The Book Function enables you to design your e-Learn course site so that material is organized like a multi-page document with chapters and sub-chapters and features a Table of Contents that makes information easily accessible to students.

Making Ed-tech Fun, Again

Educational technology has evolved quickly in the last few years, especially in online learning. Once upon a time, you could adopt a new App without even creating an account but now the ed-tech environment is riddled with ethical choices, privacy laws, and complicated software. At a time when we’re pulled in so many different directions in terms of ed-tech, it’s comforting to listen in on this conversation about making ed-tech fun.

Synchronous and Asynchronous Learning: The Debate 

When it comes to planning your upcoming courses, it is important to consider a number of factors when deciding how you will meet the learning outcomes of your courses. One key factor is which combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning works best to meet the learning outcomes as stated in the course outline. 

Consider the course content, student availability, student needs, the benefits of synchronous and asynchronous learning, and what would work best to build a community of online learners.

The following articles explore the pros and cons of both synchronous and asynchronous approaches and recognize the value of including both approaches.

WebEx Breakout Rooms

This session is for faculty who have experience with WebEx meetings, and who are looking to use the WebEx Training Centre and break out rooms for teaching synchronously online. We will cover: 
  • Setting up a training session 
  • Creating polls  
  • Creating breakout rooms

Creating Interaction and Engagement in the Synchronous Classroom

This session is for faculty who know the basics of using Teams and WebEx, but would like some more ideas for how to create interaction and engagement. We will: 
  • Discover tools in Webex and Teams that can help support interaction

The Kaltura video platform is a simple but powerful tool for creating video for your students and by your students. Learn more about how to create short but compelling videos segments. 

 
Setting Up Your Course in eLearn

This session is for faculty with limited or some experience with eLearn, who would like to explore how best to format and use eLearn to support student learning. We will: 
  • Explore different options and principles for clear learning-centred formats and design in eLearn 
  • Discuss ways to guide and direct students asynchronously

Online Teaching Fundamentals
August 17 – 21, 2020, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  
 
This five-day micro course is designed for faculty interested in developing and/or teaching an online or blended course. This course is delivered both asynchronously and synchronously. Each day begins with a daily webinar covering a different topic of course design and delivery that is followed by self-paced activities that allow you to build on what you learned. The course models an approach you can take with your students.
