Brandon Welsh, Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice, and current SCCJ student Stephen Douglas (PhD, Criminal Justice) wrote  "There has to be a Better Way: Place Managers for Crime Prevention in a Surveillance Society" for the International Journal of Comparative and Applied Criminal Justice. The article contributes to the scholarly and policy debate on alternatives to intrusive and sometimes harmful surveillance measures.

Alicia Sasser Modestino, Associate Professor of Public Policy and Urban Affairs and Economics and Associate Director of the Dukakis Center,  spoke with the Boston Globe for the article  "Northeastern Researchers Find Lack of Child Care has been a Significant Challenge for Workers During the Pandemic."

Phil Brown, University Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Health Sciences and Director of the Social Science Environmental Health Research Institute contributed to an op-ed published by Environmental Health News. The article, "PFAS Chemicals-The Other Immune System Threat," draws a connection between lowered immune system health, due to widespread PFAS contamination, and COVID-19.

Achievements and Awards 

Michael Dukakis , Distinguished Professor of Political Science, is retiring after nearly three decades of service to the College of Social Sciences and Humanities and Northeastern University. He will remain affiliated with the University as Distinguished Professor of the Practice Emeritus. Professor Dukakis has been an invaluable member of the Department of Political Science and the Master of Public Administration program since 1991. To honor his work, NU established the Kitty and Michael Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy in 1999. The Dukakis Center, housed in Northeastern University's School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs, is an interdisciplinary "think and do tank" that conducts interdisciplinary research to address a wide range of issues facing cities, towns, and suburbs, with a particular emphasis on the Greater Boston region. Thank you for your many years of service, Professor Dukakis!
Apply for the Undergraduate Research Initiative

The Undergraduate Research Initiative (URI) encourages CSSH undergraduate students to carry out research and other creative activities in collaboration with, or under the close supervision of, faculty members with relevant research expertise. With the support of this program, students can develop or enhance research competencies, including formulating research questions, developing a theoretical framework, defining the scope of a project and writing a proposal, developing a literature review, collecting data, conducting analysis, and writing up results.

URI applications for research projects undertaken during the fall 2020 semesters are due July 31.

Complete the online application form by the deadline to be considered for funding, which can be used for a variety of research-related activities. Research must be conducted with, or under the close supervision of a faculty member.

Part of the postponed 2020 Holocaust and Genocide Awareness Week, we will screen two student presentations: The 2019-20202 Gideon Klein project which is an original animated film based on a children's book,  The Children's Tree of Terezin ; and a presentation from and about the Northeastern Holocaust Awareness Archives.
