CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
Pastor Ken Albright visited our congregation last Sunday. This Sunday, January 12, we will hold
a special congregational meeting after the 10:30 service at which members of our congregation can decide, via written ballot, whether or not to extend the call to Pastor Ken.
Pastor Ken has worked in ministry for 25 years in four congregations. His wife is Charlotte and they have two adult daughters who live in NC.
More detailed information about Pastor Ken has been mailed to members and friends of Good Shepherd.

SUNDAY CLASSES
Classes begin at 9:10 a.m.
Elementary School children will begin with music in the choir room, then return to Room 3 for a Godly Play story.
Confirmation Class will not be held this Sunday but will resume next Sunday,
January 19. The confirmands will attend worship services at UUTC with Jackie Jenkins.
Intersections will meet in room 6 and will focus on the Lenten devotional booklet that our congregation and others are invited to help create.

SECOND TUESDAY WELCA MEETING AND BIBLE STUDY
The Women of the ELCA will meet on Tuesday,
January 14. The general meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m. followed by bible study at 12:00 p.m. Barbara Meyer will lead the group in a study of Ruth. Booklets will be available for purchase. Please join us!

YEAR END CONTRIBUTION REPORTS
All 2019 Year End Contribution Reports will be mailed out on or before Monday,
January 13. The mailings will be to each giver's address of record with the church office, unless you have already advised Jane Madsen otherwise. Your contribution report should be retained by you for tax purposes, if applicable. Contact information:

Note: After the YE reports are mailed, all previous quarterly contribution reports remaining in church mail slots will be removed and destroyed. If you want these for any reason, please check your mail slot before noon on Sunday, January 19.

NOISY OFFERING UPDATE
Thank you to everyone who participated in last Sunday's Noisy Offering! We raised $589.84
to help fund four of our youth attending the Lutheran Youth Organization (LYO) Assembly in Greensboro from February 21 - 23.

ATTENTION QUILTERS
Weekly quilting for Lutheran World Relief will begin again on
Tuesday, January 14, from 9:30 am. - noon. All are welcome; no sewing skills required, though are helpful.
Quilt tops made at home would be greatly appreciated. Speak to Barbara Hotaling for details (884-7308).
Cotton fabrics and sheets of dark colors or prints (not solid light colors) are always welcome as backing.

LENTEN DEVOTIONAL BOOKLET 2020
Members and friends of Good Shepherd are invited to write brief devotionals to share with our congregation and others during Lent. This year, we will focus on the passage from Philippians known as the Christ hymn. You are asked to share a story from your life that relates to one of the five themes pulled out of the Philippians text. (Click here for more information.)
Maybe your story will illustrate how someone showed humility or obedience in a difficult situation. Or maybe your story will share a time when you witnessed others praising Jesus or when your mind was like Christ's. We all have stories to share, and they can support those around us as we travel together on our faith journey.
Your story should be around 300-400 words. If you would like, you can include a question at the end of your story that prompts the reader to further reflection and/or a prayer. You are welcome to submit more than one story. Please send in your story contributions to Kimberly Dunbar in the church office ([email protected]) by Friday, February 21, or contact her with any questions. Thank you.

NEW BULLETIN BOARDS IN THE FELLOWSHIP HALL
Two new bulletin boards are going to be installed on the wall behind the serving tables in the Fellowship Hall over the next few weeks. These boards, which have been donated by a congregation member, are targeted for use by the Ministry 2020 initiative and Communications. Please continue to use the hallway bulletin boards for individual and committee communications. Stay tuned for more information to be provided soon!

Family and friends of Chris Ann Phillips, sister of Nora Johnson. Chris Ann passed away over this past weekend after a battle with cancer.
Tracy Propst, daughter-in-law of Sid Propst. Tracy suffered a brain aneurysm last week which has left her with mobility difficulties on her right side.
Jonathan Bankhead, cousin of Margarette Kennerly, has been placed in hospice care after battling a brain tumor.

REFRESHMENTS FOR GETTING AHEAD CLASSES
Sharing House is offering another Getting Ahead series,
designed to help people imagine and create a more stable financial future for themselves and their children. The class will meet on Wednesdays, beginning on January 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Brevard Wesleyan Church, and will include about 12 people.
Sharing House needs help providing snacks and drinks for the class
(i.e.
breakfast or lunch foods such as casseroles, fruit, coffee cake, sandwich trays, cheese and crackers, soups and salads, chips and dip, brownies, cookies, etc.).
Sharing House will supply the paper goods and utensils.
Providing refreshments may not seem like a worthwhile thing to do, but it is a meaningful and tangible way to accompany others, and is always greatly appreciated by class members.
Consider providing snacks with a friend. If you'd like to help, please sign up on the bulletin board or contact Kimberly Dunbar (883-3680 or [email protected]). Deliver the snacks around 9:45 a.m. to Brevard Wesleyan Church on the scheduled day
(enter the second door down in the parking lot and go up a few stairs into the fellowship hall).

CARE OF CREATION
For many years (more than 26!), the LCGS "Road Warriors" have been caring for God's creation by picking up trash and litter along a stretch of Asheville Highway. We thank them for their dedication and hard work. They are always looking for volunteers to help continue this ministry.
The group picks up trash on the third Tuesday of each month, and will next meet on January 21 at 9:00 a.m. at church. Come join them!

STEP WNC NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
STEP WNC is looking for volunteers to be LEADERS in our organization! Home Repair and Firewood Ministry for low income, disabled and/or elderly Western NC neighbors is our mission, and we are eager to find volunteers who have a heart and interest for tasks like data entry on the computer, organizing work teams, writing and designing newsletters, inspecting homes for repairs, measuring and assessing building projects, etc. If you are interested in working with STEP WNC, contact Carolyn Smith at

SYNOD STORYTELLERS
Here is a story of ministry taking place within the NC Synod, which illustrates an aspect of our synod's vision statement: God calls the NC Synod of the ELCA to cultivate & celebrate vital congregations, identify, equip, and nurture whole & healthy leaders, embrace & engage in collaboration, and proclaim the promise of the resurrection with a prophetic voice.
Prophetic Voice: Beautiful to be the church
"The more I learned about Christ's Beloved Community, the more I thought, 'This is a beautiful thing!'"
On a beautiful Thursday in October, a small group of us traveled from various spots around the synod to the south side of Winston-Salem. Based on the tiendas and taquerias in the surrounding neighborhoods, we could have easily been in southeast Florida or south Texas. The parking lot was filled with vehicles, folks were mowing the grass and trimming the hedges, volunteers were plentiful throughout the building, music was being practiced in the worship space, and lunch was being prepared. We gathered that day for as current and potential mission partners to hear the stories of Christ's Beloved Community (CBC)/ Comunidad Amada de Cristo.
