On August 31, 2016, the newly-redesigned Charlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency officially opened, marking the end of a major renovation of the Emergency Department.

Back to school thanks to Paediatric Short Stay Unit 
The Paediatric Short Stay Unit at North York General provides young patients timely access to care for up to eight hours.
With little over a week before school started, Jackson was diagnosed with pneumonia and was told he needed to be fever free for 48 hours to attend the first day of grade 5.  Determined not to miss school, Jackson was armed with antibiotics and plenty of rest, but was still not feeling any better after four days of treatment. 

A referral was made to the Paediatric Short Stay Unit for an assessment after Jackson's parents called to update their family doctor about his health.

Team considers the individual in every situation 
At North York General Hospital, managing our beds is handled by a dedicated team of specially trained, dedicated professionals, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
"Every day is a moving puzzle for our bed control specialists," says Debbie Conway-Chung, Manager, Patient Flow, Registration and Bed Control.  

Bed Control works with our patient flow team to assign and place patients, mainly from the Charlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency and operating rooms, to beds on inpatient units.

What a difference a year makes

Medical student Kate Stead
We first met medical student  Kate Stead in our October 2015 issue. She was one of the first students at our hospital to participate in a pilot of the University of Toronto's Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship program.

Kate was able to study multiple disciplines simultaneously, rather than the traditional block clerkships where medical students practise one discipline at a time.  How was Kate's experience here and has it changed her future goals?
