September 15, 2019: Hope Within History

Last Spring, about half the congregation participated in a series of listening circles to reflect on the history of this community and share hopes and dreams for our future. This Sunday, Rev. Marcus will share his reflections on those conversations and try to answer the questions, "What can you expect from being a part of a liberal religious community like this? What should you expect from a UU congregation, and from a UU minister?"

 RE Update
I am so excited to have a joyful RE year with you all. We will be starting the RE year this Sunday, exploring the monthly theme of Expectations by studying Oobleck.

We will be having an RE visioning session in the Clara Barton room after the service this Sunday, for all who wish to participate, especially RE parents, youth, and volunteers. If you can't make it to the session, please feel free to share your thoughts with me by email, or let me know if you'd like to set up a time to chat.

In faith,
Lara Abel
Director of Family Ministries

Refreshment Providers Needed
slided_apples_peel.jpg
The Hospitality Committee is reaching out to new members and existing members to fulfill the need for refreshments after the Sunday 10:30 service. It would be wonderful if we could have three people (one to be a new member) to work together to provide a light snack and do the clean up after the refreshment hour. It has been traditional that members provide snacks at least once a year for the enjoyment of all the congregation. Possibly we will have a new system of sign-up in a couple of months. Presently I need volunteers to fulfill the September and October Sundays. Please contact Judy Finn 415-328-4516 or email: [email protected].
The Poetry Connection
The Poetry Connection: A Reading Series at UUCM

Beginning September 13, 2019 , and continuing on the second Friday of each month through May of 2020, a poetry reading featuring Marin poets will be held in The Fireside Room from 7:00-9:00 p.m.  Sponsored by Marin Poet Laureate Terry Lucas and the Adult Education Committee, the readings will feature outstanding Marin poets, and give attendees the opportunity to connect with poets and lovers of poetry during refreshment time.  An open mic will follow, with the opportunity for those attending to read a short poem (one page).  UUCM members and the public are invited.
Dinners for Eight Potluck Event - Sept. 14 at UUCM
salad.jpg
Dinners for Eight, a long-standing tradition of monthly potluck dinners held in members' homes, will kick-off on September 14th at 5 pm.

Our first event will be a potluck gathering at the church. All are invited, especially families.  We will have a chance to greet old friends and meet new, while sharing a meal.

We will have subsequent meals at members' home, on the second Saturday of each month.  You will have an opportunity to join our mailing list for future dinners.   We are grateful for members who offer to host a dinner, but most importantly, we welcome anyone who is willing to join us regularly or on occasion.

Please let Sher Sheldon at  [email protected]  know if you will join us on September 14th at 5 p.m at the church, and what you might bring to share.

Warm regards,
Sher Sheldon and Kristina Gale
Social Justice Meeting on Sunday, 9/15, 12:00 pm
Social Justice meeting will be on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 12:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary .

Basket Share on Sept. 29 for SURJ Marin (Showing Up for Racial Justice).  SURJ Marin is part of a national network organizing white people for racial justice.  They have been active in Marin for about two years and work in the community developing relationships with other groups to act for racial justice.  Through skill building and political analysis, they work to effect change.  Workshops, trainings, film/book discussions and meet-ups are some of the educational tools used to reach the community.  A major portion of their fundraising proceeds goes directly to their accountability partners, the Multicultural Center of Marin and the Marin City Health and Wellness Center.
50th Anniversary Quilt in Stairwell
How many of you know that the quilt in the stairwell has a Flaming Chalice in the center?  Check it out.  The narrow yellow border contains the names of the founding members. On the green border are autographs of the members at the time the quilt was made. Look for your name if you were a member then.  The quilt was designed by artist and former member Edy Raby and pieced by Edy and long time member Lorayne Hansen.
Remarkable People Returns!!
Friday, September 20, 7 - 9 pm  Fireside Room

This ongoing series gives us time to learn about each other from the interesting stories of individual lives in an evening of sharing and community.

Each person talks briefly, followed by time for questions and general sociability and some sustaining snacks .

BJ VanGelder and Lara Abel, our new Director of Family Ministries, are our Remarkable People for September.

Learn more about how BJ VanGelder got from Nebraska to California to Oregon, then back to teaching 5th grade in Berkeley while also finding her husband at a Quaker work camp in Maine.  She was one of the charter Eichler Homes families that established the Terra Linda community of the 60s when there were "probably 50 children on every block."  And she is still going strong at Aldersly.

You might know that Lara Abel is our new Director of Family Ministries - but you might not yet know that she is a third generation Unitarian and has known Rev. Marcus since they were both upstart UU youth.  She grew up in the Santa Rosa congregation and has held a range of positions, including Worship and RE leadership, as the Petaluma UUs grew, while also holding an institutional research role at Santa Rosa JC.  Come learn more about her joint adventure now with us and as a Cal Bear.

And if you are looking ahead, mark your calendar for October 18 when Terry Lucas and Judy Finn will share more remarkability.
Theater on the Go
Sandy Levitan, one of our newer members of UU, will be offering a theater activity, called Theater On The Go, for the fall of this year.

The plays for September are:

Cinnabar Theater, Petaluma, "Little Shop of Horrors,"  Sept. 15th, 2 pm.

A deviously delicious Broadway and Hollywood sci-fi smash musical "Little Shop of Horrors" has taken the hearts of theatre-goers for over 30 years.  A meek floral assistant stumbles across a new breed of plant he names "Audrey II," after his coworker crush.  This foul-mouthed, R&B singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down and out floral shop.

Novato Theater Co., "The Humans," Sept. 28th, 7:30 pm.

Let me know your plans, if any, and we can plan a dinner out.

If you'd like to join Sandy, please email her at  [email protected]   Tickets will be purchased by the participants.
Elders Taking Action on the Climate Crisis
As the attached flyer says, "Young Climate Activists get it; so do we!" This is a rallying cry to all Elders to unite and, as a more powerful constituency, make our voices heard. I don't have to tell you what a critical time this is for human life -- future and now! Without powerful, united, concerted pressure the corporations and politicians will continue their greedy paths.

Please join us for sharing information, learning options and initiatives that we can support and personally use to make a difference now, before it is too late.  The attached flyer tells about the program which is happening Saturday, Sept 21.  You may also like to visit our website EldersClimateAction.org.

If you need a ride or are interested in carpooling, please let me know.
For other information about ECA, please call or write.

Sunset Ferry Cruise
SUMMER-ENDING SEPTEMBER 21 SUNSET FERRY CRUISE FUNdraiser is headed our way!  See the flyer in the foyer @ UUCM.  We are always wanting to put the FUN in fundraiser and this one is it!  We sail out to the Golden Gate Bridge just at sunset time & return, all the while having a convivial time with each person's hearty hors d'oeuvres to share and their favorite beverage.  Your little cooler to transport the goodies is perfect.  We will have a champagne toast to begin our journey (compliments of Rich & Glynda) and then let the libations, song-singing, good times begin!  This is a good fundraiser to get your friends to; it supports UUCM ($20 of the $50 ticket goes to UUCM, $30 for ferry ticket) and, what a beautiful, serene end-of-summer evening!  The point is to share, to enjoy each other, to have fun on a ferry, and to support our spiritual home!  Contact Board Member Rich Panter at  [email protected], or Glynda Christian at  [email protected], or phone them: 707-875-8911.

SEND YOUR CHECK FOR TICKETS MADE OUT TO UUCM TO THE CHURCH ADDRESS (240 Channing Way, San Rafael, CA 94903), ATTENTION R. PANTER, BOARD MEMBER.
Touch of Beauty
Hello UUCMers - and welcome to a new congregational year. Would you like to volunteer one time for Touch of Beauty? If so, please let me know by return email and I will put your name on the calendar. It means that you bring an arrangement, and place it on the small white table (kept in the closet behind the piano). Know that the flowers always bring joy to people at the service!

One favor - please send two dates - a first and second choice, so I can more easily assign you to a free date.

Thanks!
