December 2018
As the year draws to a close, we want to thank each of you for your role in ensuring our nutrition, garden, and environmental education programs continue to serve our community. Because of your generosity we served over 5,000 guests at Olivewood Gardens this year.
We continue to strive to provide the highest quality, highest impact programs to students, parents and families and appreciate your continued support. Take a look at our 2017-2018 Impact Report to learn more about what your support makes possible.

Please consider making a gift to our year-end campaign so we can continue to change the conversation regarding health, food access and sustainability.

Thank you to Sweetwater Authority for their commitment to Olivewood and to providing healthy drinking water to National City and South Bay communities!

We have officially cut the ribbon on our new kitchen and have started to use it for programs! We are still raising the last $10k to cover the final costs - stools for guests learning healthy habits, kitchen items to support improved learning experiences, and an additional garbage disposal to make the program clean-up process more efficient and effective.  Thank you to Lars Remodeling and Design for their generosity and support!

stratWe'd Love Your Feedback!

This fall, Olivewood Gardens embarked on a journey to develop a three-year strategy so we can continue to provide programs that are impactful, meet the needs of our community and help change alarming trends around type 2 diabetes, obesity and other health related illnesses. As valued members of our community, we are asking for your feedback. Please take 5-10 minutes to fill out our survey so we can build a plan to meet all needs. If you want to dig deeper or have other feedback, please reach out to Jen.

November & December Highlights
programs We graduated our 14th generation of Cooking for Salud focusing on National City's aging community, celebrating 14 new Kitchenistas. These empowered Kitchenistas will go back to their living and community centers to be health leaders. We can't stop thinking about what one of our Kitchenistas said at the graduation: " We are all waiting for a moment where we can tell the world what we love about it. "

We couldn't be more proud  to partner with Lars Remodeling and Design. They joined us last year and helped us design and build a kitchen that meets our needs to provide nutrition education to all. Thanks to their vision, support and dedication to a healthier community.

The Kitchenistas hosted a monthly meeting with the goal of convening all 14 generations.  We welcomed nearly 60 Kitchenistas to the gardens for community building and delicious food. Throughout the month, Kitchenistas continued peer-to-peer nutrition presentations and healthy cooking demonstrations at local schools. This semester, the Kitchenistas taught 80 local parents how to cook with kids in the kitchen and made yummy energy snack bites. As we approach the holidays, the Kitchenistas are looking forward to an Olivewood tamalada and posada to celebrate with friends.

We hosted our annual Healthy Holidays Cooking Class, a couple of groups for farm-to-table meals and garden tours with Epicurean San Diego, a birthday party featuring cuisine created by the Kitchenista's catering company Cocina ArteSanal, a group that won a house stay at Olivewood with meals created by Chef Joe Pastry of WooBar! and Waters Fine Foods & Catering and Sam the Cooking Guy of Not Not Tacos, Chefcitos classes for Chula's Mission, and of course, field trips for students from National City and throughout the County.
