Feelin' GROOVY!

A Note From Pastor Linda

Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of time... ~Ephesians 5

Dear Church,

Slow down, you move too fast
You've got to make the morning last
Just kicking down the cobblestones
Looking for fun and feelin' groovy
Ba da-da da-da da-da, feeling groovy...

Do you know the name of that song? Here is one hint: it is not "Feelin' Groovy."

The name of the song is "The 59 th Street Bridge Song" by Simon and Garfunkel. The story goes that Paul Simon was crossing New York's Queensboro Bridge early one bright sunny morning and he started writing the song in his head that would become known to many as "Feelin' Groovy". The Queensboro Bridge is notoriously noisy and mechanical. You walk on metal grates that vibrate as the traffic zooms by, creating a dangerous and exciting sensation. Interesting factoid, while this is one of Simon & Garfunkel's best-known songs, it was never a hit for them.

For me, this song is a reminder to SLOW DOWN. As I have been studying the life of Fred Rogers, I am trying to do this with intentionality. Fred was a master at it. His slow pace was comforting and comfortable. It was what drew Fred's audience in to his space; slow and deliberate communication.

Known by Evie as Framma and Frampa (aka grandma and grandpa), Mark and I are learning that the very BEST thing we can give to all our grandchildren is the gift of TIME- to slow down, to make the morning last! It's funny, although we all have the same amount of time in a day, grandparents seem to have more of it to give away to their grandchildren.

I got no deeds to do, no promises to keep
I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep
Let the morningtime drop all its petals on me
Life, I love you, all is groovy!

See you in CHURCH!

 ~Pastor Linda

October Book Club:
Born A Crime by Trevor Noah
Monday, October 7
7 PM in the Gathering Space

Trevor Noah's unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents' indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa's tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle.
