Commodore James Gubelmann
Message from the Commodore
James Gubelmann

The 12 Metre sailing season got off to a great start with nine of our fleet racing in three classes at New York Yacht Club's 161st Annual Regatta. For the first time, NYYC added "stadium racing" to the event schedule. By conducting the races close to shore, it enabled a land-based audience at Fort Adams to view the action, much like at the America's Cup World Series and recent Volvo Ocean In-Port Race. It is terrific to share the spectacular sight of the 12s racing with folks ashore who may not otherwise have the opportunity to view the competition. We have posted results and photos of this event on our website, 12myc.org and will continue to post others throughout the summer, so keep checking back!

6 + 8 + 12 = 2017?
A Message from 12MYC Treasurer, Jamie Hilton
Jamie HiltonThere exists a wonderful synergy and overlap of interest and experience between the three active Metre Classes of the International Rule. The Sixes, Eights and Twelves each have very active racing fleets and many sailors, including myself, that race in more than one of these 3 Classes. Why not bring them together in Newport for an International Metre Week Regatta? With this vision in mind, I have recently initiated conversations exploring ways in which just such an event could be organized to coincide with the New York Yacht Club's 163rd Annual Regatta in June 2017.

6 Metre The Sixes
The initial idea was presented to me by Christian Teichmann, a German 6 Metre sailor, who noted that he had a great experience sailing at the 2009 Six Metre World Cup in Newport. He thought that it would be great if the Sixes came back to race in Newport while in transit to Vancouver, B.C. for 6 the Metre World Championship in July of 2017. Subsequent to that conversation, the International Six Metre Association (ISMA) took up the topic at their AGM in La Trinite sur Mer, France. At that meeting, the majority of those present were excited by the idea of racing at Newport in June of 2017. Potentially, these European boats could be met on our race course by 10 or more Sixes currently within 150 miles of Narragansett Bay.

The Eights
Coincidentally and concurrently, I made the acquaintance of Hugh Beaton, an avid 8 Meter sailor in Toronto, Ontario. Hugh told me that the Eight Metre Class may also be looking for an excuse to come race in Newport and explained that June 2017 would work well within their existing racing schedule.

12 Metre The Twelves
At the June 2015 North American 12 Metre Fleet meeting, I presented the idea for a Multi-Metre Regatta to the assembled 12 Metre owners. The idea was met with great enthusiasm... but, as we know, it takes a great deal of resources and organization to create a successful sailing event of this size.

Metre Week
If you share the vision for this event and would like to participate in making it happen, please contact me asap.

Respectfully submitted,

Making A Comeback: Easterner, US12-18

Easterner, US12-18, a Third Rule AC Twelve, designed by C. Raymond Hunt was originally owned by the Chandler Hovey family and raced in the Defender Selection Trials for the America's Cup in 1958, 1962 and 1964. Chandler Hovey III, our Vice Commodore maintains a keen interest in Easterner.

In 2014, Thorpe Leeson of Newport, RI purchased her, and in a recent communication, we learned about the current status of this historic 12...

Leeson reported, "Recently we trucked Easterner from Maine to the Bristol Marine Yard in Somerset, Massachusetts. She's not very pretty on the outside, but we have cleaned out and repainted her interior. Nearly all of her varnish has peeled since she was in storage for almost five years, but structurally she appears to be just fine. Soon we will have the engine craned out and then we will move her into a shed where her topsides will be stripped and re-varnished."

NEW Twelve Metre Launched: Anker Project #434

Anker Project #434
Anker Project #434, photo by: Lilli Berking

It was a very special moment in yachting history, when the first newly-constructed wooden 12-metre in more than 50 years was launched at the Heritage Yachting Centre in Flensburg, Germany last month. Robbe & Berking Classics was able to source and secure all of the drawings for design number 434 by Johan Anker, dating from 1939. On one hand this is a brand new yacht fresh out of the yard's building shed, but on the other she looks just as she would have, were she built 75 years ago.... read more

Plastic Fantastic: KZ-7, Kiwi Magic for Sale

Kiwi MagicKZ-7 is world-famous for being the last and best-built of the three "plastic fantastics." Since her original glory days blasting around Perth, Australia (during the 1987 Americas Cup) she has been updated with new winches, sails and deck hardware by several loving owners that spared no expense to keep her in near-perfect condition. She was last sailed at the 2012 12 Metre North American Championship, which she won handily. Since then, she has spent much of her time stored in a heated shed in Rhode Island. Kiwi Magic, KZ-7, the very best and last composite-built 12 metre in the world, is "seriously for sale"... click for more details and photos.
