October 2018
This October is a busy one!  We are halfway through our 14th generation of Cooking for Salud focused on building Age-Friendly Communities, our kitchen remodel is having finishing touches put in place, our college and high school interns have begun supporting our Children's Field Trip Program, Cooking for Salud, and Garden; and we have an exciting new event coming up on October 27th - Costumes, Cocktails, and Cornhole...not to mention our Healthy Haunted Garden on Halloween!

A special thanks to the

Staff Updates

Our amazing Coordinator of Volunteers and Outreach, Cristina Juarez, has spent the last three years strengthening our Volunteer and Internship Program, building our Kitchenistas Community Engagement Program, and creating important relationships with community partners.  Cristina will now be transitioning into a new role at Olivewood as Garden Supervisor.  Congratulations, Cristina!

Job Opening

We graduated our 13th generation of Cooking for Salud, celebrating 17 new Kitchenistas. We started our 14th generation focusing on the aging community in National City. We recruited participants through healthy cooking demos and nutrition presentations at local senior centers and living facilities with the goal that once graduated, we will support these Kitchenistas as they go back into their communities as health ambassadors.

We hosted another group of SDG&E employees celebrating their successes in an employee wellness challenge! To find out how you can bring your coworkers to Olivewood for a teambuilding adventure, contact Claire
We also had a troop of Girl Scouts join us for a "Salsa, Sopes, and a Little Sweetness" themed Chefcitos class.

The Kitchenistas participated in a number of activities.  Our trained Kitchenistas taught nutrition presentations and healthy cooking demos for parents at some of the National School District schools.  Throughout the year, they will provided two presentations at each of the ten schools in the local elementary school district. Kitchenistas also participated in their monthly meeting, a mushroom class, a Kitchenista-to-Kitchenista healthy cooking class, a family focus group to discuss local transportation infrastructure for SANDAG, the Binational Obesity Symposium, and have begun a chiropractic health workshop series.

We hosted Cultivating Conversation: A Dine and Learn Series dinner featuring Chef Flor Franco and her partner Chef Torrey from Franco on Fifth and a discussion with Elizabeth Camarena of Casa Cornelia Law Center.  A special thanks to all of our guests and supporters including:
Chef Cristina Ng of Chinita's Pies, the Berry Good Food Foundation, Specialty Produce, TAJ Farms, Two Forks Family Garden, J. Brix Wines, Rio del Rey, Capay Mills, and Fully Belly Farm.

SDG&E Tips
Growing in the Garden Garden

It's officially fall and we've got all the best fall fruits and veggies growing in the gardens - all sorts of greens, brassicas like cauliflower and broccoli, lots of citrus, and even some asparagus!
Curried Cauliflower and Chickpea Soup
Adapted from NYT Cooking/Martha Rose Shulman
Created by Chef Marguerite Grifka

Ingredients
1 Tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon curry powder
2 tsp ground cumin
½ tsp ground cinnamon
2 T chopped ginger (optional)
4 cloves garlic chopped
1 medium onion chopped ½ " pieces
1 medium (1/2 lb) sweet potato chopped ½ " pieces
1 head cauliflower chopped in 1 " pieces
1 15 oz can chickpeas
1 ½ quarts water, vegetable stock or chicken broth
1 lemon or lime

Directions
Heat oil in a 4 qt sauce pan. Add spices and then quickly add onion and garlic.
Sauté on medium for 5 minutes. Add cauliflower, sweet potato and chickpeas.
Bring to a simmer and cook for ½ an hour.

Blend 3 cups of the soup and add back to the pot, or use an immersion blender to partially blend the soup. Season to taste with salt. Squeeze lemon/lime and serve.
