Suicide is a tragic end to a life, a permanent solution to a temporary problem, yet it is one of the fastest growing epidemics in the US and across the world. Each year in the US alone 44,000 people commit suicide, and 31,000 of those suicides are Caucasian males. Suicide Prevention Awareness Month raises awareness of this tragic situation and encourages education on how to prevent it.
Educate yourself in the ways you can identify those who are at risk for suicide. If you have been having suicidal thoughts be sure to contact a suicide hotline, speak to a friend or family member, or seek professional therapy.
Out of the Darkness Walk
When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

Grant Funding Available - Request for Proposals Released
|
Contra Costa County announces its Census 2020 Outreach and Assistance Grants through a Request for Proposals (RFP). The grant opportunity is available to tax-exempt organizations, schools, and public agencies to help ensure that every person in Contra Costa County is counted.
The County seeks to fund grantees that are committed to ensuring a complete count of County residents with an emphasis on Hard to Count populations. Grant amounts in phase one of the RFP released today will range between $2,000 to $20,000 to support Census outreach and education in Contra Costa County.
The grant funding was approved by the Board of Supervisors based on the recommendation of the County's Census 2020 Complete Count Steering Committee to invest in and support Census 2020 outreach and education efforts. The Complete Count Steering Committee was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to help ensure a fair and complete 2020 Census count.
"Contra Costa County is proud to support organizations that will mobilize our communities to ensure a complete count of all residents," said Board Chair, Supervisor John Gioia. "A fair and accurate count is important to ensure that Contra Costa County gets its fair share of federal funding for vital services and infrastructure."
Census data collected every 10 years is the source of important information for communities, businesses, and governments. Many households will begin receiving communications from the U.S. Census Bureau in March, 2020. This Census count determines how many representatives each state has in Congress and how over $675 billion in federal funds are distributed to tribal, state and local governments each year to support education, infrastructure, and social services that are vital to our communities.
A George Washington University study estimates that for every person not counted, California and its local governments lose an estimated $2,000 a year per individual. Forty-two percent of Contra Costa County's funding comes from federal and state resources.
"We cannot underestimate the importance of guaranteeing an accurate Census 2020 count. It is critical that we work together to educate, motivate and activate all Contra Costa County residents, particularly those who may not be aware of the Census, or who may be reluctant to respond," said Supervisor Diane Burgis, District 3, and Chair of the County's Census 2020 Complete Count Steering Committee.
"This funding will help trusted messengers in our hardest-to-count communities to share that the Census is easy, safe and important," Burgis added. "And that we must all be ready to say "Count Me In" because "We All Count" in Census 2020."
To help support local organizations and agencies that are working to engage and promote the participation of all Contra Costa County residents, particularly in hard to count communities, the County released Phase 1 of the RFP for Census 2020 Outreach and Assistance Grants. Grant applications must be submitted by 5:00 pm on Monday, September 30, 2019 via email to

A Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) is a collaboratively developed plan that identifies wildland fire hazards, prioritizes ways to reduce those hazards and recommends measures for homeowners and communities to reduce ignitability of structures.
The Diablo Fire Safe Council is working with local fire departments, agencies, homeowner groups and others to update the existing Contra Costa County CWPP.
Share your knowledge, test your wildfire awareness and learn more about what you can do to reduce the threat of wildfire.

Sustainability Commission

The Sustainability Commission has twelve members and five alternate members, all of whom are residents of the County. The Sustainability Commission advises the Board of Supervisors and staff on design and implementation of the County's Climate Action Plan, including opportunities to realize equity and fairness across the diverse communities of Contra Costa County and how to better engage County residents and businesses on climate issues.
The Sustainability Commission meets every other month on the fourth Monday, 5-7 p.m., except in December. Meetings are held at 30 Muir Road, Martinez, unless otherwise noted in the agenda, which is posted online a few days before the meeting.

The Knightsen TAC advises the District Supervisor on land issues and planning matters affecting the Knightsen community.
The Knightsen TAC may also advise the District Supervisor on services which are or may be provided to the community by Contra Costa County or other local government agencies. Such services include, but are not limited to, public health, safety, welfare, public works, and planning.
The Knightsen TAC will meet on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 7:30pm located at the Knightsen Garden Club, 3067 Knightsen Avenue in Knightsen.
Library Commission

The Commission serves in an advisory capacity to the Board of Supervisors and the County Librarian; provides a forum for the community to provide input concerning Library operations, and recommends proposals to the Board of Supervisors and the County Librarian which may improve the Library.

Assessment Appeals Board

The Assessment Appeals Board conducts impartial hearings on property assessment disputes between taxpayers and the county assessor. Based on the evidence presented at these hearings, the appeals board determined the value of the disputed property or determines other matters of property tax assessment within the board's jurisdiction.
Qualifications:
Applicants should possess five or more years of professional experience in California as one of the following: licensed real estate broker, attorney, certified public accountant (CPA) or public accountant, property appraiser accredited by a nationally recognized professional organization, property appraiser certified by the Office of Real Estate Appraisers, or property appraiser certified by the State Board of Equalization.
Compensation:
This is a volunteer position. Assessment Appeals Board members are compensated for their time at hearings and reimbursed for their mileage to attend assessment appeals hearings.
The Assessment Appeals Board meets every Thursday at 9:00 a.m. located at 651 Pine Street, Room 107 in Martinez.
