Legal Link's Clergy Justice Project
The legal system is severely under-resourced and inherently complex. The majority of low-income individuals do not get the right help at the right time. 86% of the civil legal problems reported by low-income Americans in the past year received inadequate legal help, and our state has one free attorney for every 7,000+ qualifying Californians. As a result, communities in need of legal support - for things like evictions, custody disputes, or immigration concerns - are often unable to access the legal remedies available to help them break the cycle of poverty. Recent research shows that what people need is not always a lawyer, but a trusted person with an ability to navigate procedures, rules, and resources. Founded in 2015,
Legal Link created the first Legal First Aid training program to train trusted community members to help fill this critical gap. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with San Francisco faith-based organizations and to bring our Legal First Aid program to your congregations. We look forward to kicking off our work together at the September SFIC breakfast.

The San Francisco Interfaith Council
Reilly Rastello
The
San Francisco Interfaith Council
(SFIC) welcomes
Coro Northern California
Public Affairs Fellow Reilly Rastello. A native of Boulder, Colorado, Reilly graduated Cum Laude from the University of Notre Dame in May 2019, with a B.A. in Political Science and a minor in Constitutional Studies. Reilly comes to his fellowship with an impressive portfolio of academic achievements, complemented by extensive internships, both on Capitol Hill as well as in his home state's Governor's Office. Reilly hopes to pursue a career in civil rights law and public policy.
The project he will pursue, while with the SFIC, is to assist in developing an outreach plan to achieve maximum 2020 census participation among San Francisco's "hard to count" and those served by communities of faith. More specifically, he will help to develop a toolkit for congregation and religious leaders with educational platforms and outreach recommendations and resources that will help to build trust in the census process, recruit volunteers to assist congregants in responding to the census, offer linguistic support to those incapable of submitting their responses electronically and secure religious institutional facilities as hubs at which census data collection and responses would be facilitated.
The SFIC is grateful for the opportunity to collaborate on this timely and important endeavor with our cross-sector partners, the San Francisco Office of Civic Engagement and Immigrant Affairs, 2020 Census Community Partnerships and Engagement Program U.S. Census Bureau, LA Regional Census Center, Coro Northern California, The San Francisco Foundation and its FAITHS Program.
