Captain's Corner

The competition in our Annual Club Awards Program is really tight this year with only two blue marlin currently separating the six leaders in the Top Private Boat and Top Captain categories and very close races in the other standings as well.

After a slow summer compared to the last few years, the marlin bite seems to have picked up again as of Labor Day weekend. Most of the boats that went out reported at least one blue for their trip with Game Plan fishing out of Port Aransas going 8 for 10 on blues. They caught all of their fish (which were all 400-600 lbs) using stand up tackle in a single day, which I'm pretty sure is a new one day record for the Gulf. We still have another month or so of decent weather and, if the bite continues, I'm sure the leader boards will be seeing a few changes before the end of the season.

The response to the catastrophic damage Dorian brought to the Bahamas, specifically Abaco and Grand Bahamas islands, has been amazing. Many groups and organizations from the U.S., including our friends from D-Dey Response Group, headed over immediately to assist.  D-Dey assembled a team of medics and have set up a base camp on North Eleuthera to directly assist with medical needs and medical evacuations, and are still fundraising for supplies (link: https://paypal.me/pools/c/8hWfG7FFzw).

As we all watch the devastation and donate to help with aid, let's not forget that their recovery will take a long time, and they will need more help as the cycle ends and it becomes "old news".  Obviously, their main source of income is tourism, and it will take a long time for those areas to be rebuilt so that they can sustain visitors.  Boat Harbour, where many in this Club have enjoyed evenings at the pool bar and days on the docks, looks to be a complete loss (as this video shows: https://www.local10.com/weather/hurricane/local-10-s-jenise-fernandez-recounts-abaco-islands-devastation-after-hurricane-dorian).

Our friends in the Bahamas have weathered many storms over the years, but this storm was like no other.  Let's show them that our support and response will greater than Dorian's wrath.
Fun Fishing Day set for October 12 in Galveston
Sponsor, Volunteer and Donor opportunities available!

The 8th Annual FUN FISHING DAY will be held at the Pelican Rest Marina on October 12, 2019. We are excited to host the children of the Ronald McDonald House AND the children of Shriners Hospital for Children again this year!

The children and their families will spend the morning fishing with Club volunteers who will help them bait their hooks, reel in their fish and keep track of their winning catches. They will also be treated to a delicious lunch and end the day with trophies and pictures of their day!

Thanks to Moody Bank, Carol and Jack Beal, W.A.D.E., Galveston Party Boats, Rogue Wave Solutions, Mary Had A Little Party, Passion With Purpose, Heather and Kevin Harper and Ida Mendiola for their early pledges of support!!!

To be a part of this event as a sponsor, volunteer, or donor, contact the Club today!

Scholarship Recipients Head Back To Class for 2019/2020 Academic Year
Grateful for HGBFC's support, students share their thanks

The Club is honored to support deserving students in Texas through its Scholarship Program, and here are some excerpts from the notes of thanks we've received from this year's recipients:

"Thank you so much for allowing me to use this scholarship to further my education!"

"I would like to thank you for selecting me as a recipient of the Houston Big Game Fishing Club Scholarship. It means a tremendous amount that I was awarded this scholarship and I am eternally grateful for your consideration and investment in my education."

"You don't know how much these scholarships have helped me and others. I plan on joining the Club one day (hopefully soon after I graduate and start working) so I can also donate and help others through the Scholarship Program."

"This scholarship is bringing me steps closer to achieving my lifelong goal of a college degree, and I am extremely grateful for it. By being awarded the Houston Big Game Fishing Club scholarship, this will allow me to spend more of my time focusing on school and volunteering in my community. With my degree choice, Maritime Administration, I am wanting to graduate early and I plan to earn an internship hopefully by next summer. The thought that I am being supported by this foundation when the school year starts is more than I could ask for."
