The IRS supports the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to help individuals file their federal and state tax returns. VITA programs not only allow taxpayers to avoid significant fees for tax preparation services, but also help prevent taxpayers from becoming victims to taxpayer refund theft, and/or identity theft.
How can you help? Volunteer to be a VITA tax preparer or a tax site greeter for the Boise State Volunteer VITA program. Other important roles include translators and administrative support.
The time commitment during tax season is very reasonable – about 2 to 3 hours per week. Retired? You could be a huge help! The tax software will guide a preparer through the process with an interview style format. All volunteers are provided training, and tax preparers take certification exams (open book) to demonstrate adequate tax knowledge, and also use a practice lab for simulated tax preparation. There are experienced tax preparers on site to assist volunteers. All tax returns are reviewed with the taxpayer by experienced, certified tax preparers – there is a safety net for the volunteer and for the taxpayer!
