A Note from Board Member Kevin Ebert

|
My name is Kevin Ebert and I am proud to have served on the Board of Education for the past 6 years. Due to other commitments, I am not running for a seat on the Board this fall. As I reflect on my time as a Board member, I wanted to share some of the work I have been part of during my time on the Board.
I decided to join the Board of Education in 2013 to take an active role in reshaping the district. At the time I joined the Board, there had been several superintendents in just a few years, with the district going in many different directions. I wanted to be able to help move the district in the right direction, even if it meant making hard decisions.
Being on the Board taught me many things. I learned how to be responsive to our community, and the importance of listening when community members share thoughts and concerns. Input from our community has been very valuable to my decision-making process these past 6 years.
Another thing I learned is how difficult the school finance situation is in Colorado. Until I was behind the scenes, I really didn't know how many hard decisions have to be made as a result of lack of funds.
During my time on the Board, I'm proud that we were able to bring the Nutrition Services Department in-house when we had previously contracted out that service. We’re now able to offer our students
delicious and nutritious meals
. I’m also proud of the work we accomplished to pass the bond and mill levy in 2016. Our new schools are beautiful and inspiring places to learn.
I have many hopes for the future of our district. Mostly, I’m hoping to see even more progress on the Academic Advancement Initiative. We have come a long way, with lots of hard work from our staff and students, and I know we will continue to see growth in this area.
Englewood is a place where everyone knows you and knows about you, like a family. I have been honored to serve our community on the Board of Education these past six years. Thank you for the opportunity.

Research shows that students whose parents are involved in their education are more successful in school. Sometimes you may not know how to get involved, or what opportunities are available that will match the time commitment you can make. We've made a list of district and school committees and volunteer opportunities to make it easier for you to become involved! Links or contact information are provided for you to learn more.
District Committees:
Special Education Advisory Committee
New to Englewood this year! SEAC is a district-level committee whose members are interested in the quality of education received by children/youth with disabilities. The committee is expected to include parents of and individuals with disabilities, educational service providers, administrators and representatives of other stakeholder groups. The function of this advisory committee is to provide advice based on data and good judgement. For more information, contact Callan Ware, Executive Director of Student Services at

Gifted Education Advisory Committee
We are looking to build the framework for this committee in the fall semester through emails and shared documents. We will meet 1-2 times during the spring semester. There are positions for up to 5 parents who are each committed to a 2-year term. This commitment is open to parents of students who are identified as gifted education students. Language Development Council
The Language Development Council (LDC) is a group that meets monthly and is made of up families of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Learners. The goal of the LDC is to provide a welcoming, engaging and safe environment for all participants while teaching families how to become advocates for themselves and their children. 1338 Committee
The 1338 Committee is charged with consulting with the Board of Education as to the fairness, credibility and professional quality of the licensed personnel (teacher) performance evaluation system and its process and procedures. The 1338 Committee is accepting applications now! To apply,

Englewood Education Foundation
The Englewood Education Foundation provides scholarships to Englewood Schools graduates as well as creativity grants to assist teachers with educational activities in their classrooms. EEF gives out over $30,000 worth of scholarships each year. EEF is currently looking for new members! Meetings are held monthly at 4101 S. Wellness Committee
Englewood Schools has developed a Wellness Policy that is focused on improving the health of our students. The Wellness Committee meets a minimum of 3 times a school year to ensure the policy is working as it should. For more information about the Wellness Committee, you can

Board of Education Meetings
Every first Tuesday of the month, the Englewood Board of Education meets to discuss district business. These meetings are open to the public, and time is given at the beginning of the meeting for public comment. Attend a Board meeting as your schedule allows to gain a greater understanding of the work happening in the district. For more information,

. The Board will be looking to appoint a new member this fall. More information about the application process will be coming soon.
District Accountability Committee Meetings
The District Accountability Committee (DAC) is responsible for (1) making recommendations to the school board concerning budget priorities, (2) making recommendations concerning the preparation of the district Performance, Improvement, Priority Improvement, or Turnaround plan (whichever is applicable), (3) providing input and recommendations to principals, on an advisory basis, concerning the development and use of assessment tools to measure and evaluate student academic growth as it relates to teacher evaluations, and (4) cooperatively determining other areas and issues to address and make recommendations upon. School-Based Committees:
Each school has a School Accountability Committee (SAC) and a Parent-Teacher or Parent-Teacher-Student group. Some schools have other groups as well (listed below.)
School Accountability Committees (SACs): Open to all parents/guardians
An advisory committee made up of building leaders, teachers, parents and community members. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Making recommendations to the principal concerning priorities for spending school funds
- Making recommendations concerning the preparation of the school's Unified Improvement Plan
- Assisting the district in implementing at the school level the district's parent engagement policy
- Assisting school personnel to increase parents' engagement with teachers, including parents' engagement in creating students' READ plans

- Advisory Council - A group of parents who work with the director in developing school policy and decision-making for the program.
- Head Start Policy Committee - Group of Head Start parents who are voted into committee by Head Start families. This group approves policy, shares ideas and helps with decision-making for the program.

Our schools are always looking for volunteers to help with events, in classrooms, in the main office, on field trips or other various opportunities. PLEASE reach out to your child's teacher or principal for information on how you can help! Opportunities are available to suit almost any schedule and ability.
Maddox ECE Volunteer Groups
- Bee Keepers - Dads participating in daily activities and providing positive role models for all students.
- Grandparent Group - Meet for coffee once a month and work on projects that support the program.
- Classroom Partners - Support classroom and program by being a communication support for their child's classroom teacher and Family Service Staff.

Nutrition Services is excited to celebrate local farms in our new Farm of the Month Program! Every month, we will highlight a Colorado farm's seasonal produce on our lunch line. We think it's important to connect our students to agriculture, providing them with opportunities to learn more about the food they eat. September's Farm of the Month is Large Vista Ranch and their watermelon!

Has your child ever wanted to play a musical instrument? Here is their chance! It's free! Englewood Arts will bring two pianos, two guitars, two violins and two cellos to the Instrument Lab at your child's school. Your child will get to play all four for six weeks! Through the generosity of Englewood Arts, this class is free of charge to Englewood students. Discover the joy of making music!

Notice of Cancellation of Election
|
|
On August 30, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. there were no more candidates than offices to be filled at the election for Board of Directors in Englewood Schools. The deadline for filing an affidavit of intent to be a write-in candidate has also passed, with no individuals filing such an affidavit and no ballot issues or questions submitted to the voters by the district.

Cheetahs Go Green
Staff members and students from Cherrelyn Elementary wore green to school on Friday, August 30 in honor of Cherrelyn receiving a rating of PERFORMANCE on the School Performance Framework. Performance is the highest rating a school can receive!
|

Pringles Challenge
The Englewood High School AVID classes participated in the Pringles Challenge last week to test their collaboration and engineering skills. Each group had to create a self-standing ring out of only 1 tube of Pringles chips. AP Physics students Ethan Cuenca & Brady Andrews were able to complete the task the fastest in only 12 minutes.
