The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost
A Collect for the Commemoration of September 11:
Eternal God, in whose perfect kingdom no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness, and no strength known but the strength of love: We pray thee so mightily to shed and spread abroad thy Spirit, that all peoples and ranks may be gathered under one banner, of the Prince of Peace; as children of one God and Father of all; to whom be dominion and glory now and for ever. Amen.

Hurricane Dorian Aftermath:
Supporting Water Mission’s Relief Efforts in the Bahamas
Following Hurricane Dorian’s pass at the Lowcountry, we are swiftly recovering: yards are cleaned up, power has returned, and school is back in session. We thank God for His protection from a storm which many feared would be catastrophic for us. In the Bahamas, though, the people continue to suffer; 96% or more are reported to be without access to clean water. Water Mission, one of St. Philip's world mission partners, is working to provide 35,000 gallons of clean water daily, as well as generators, water treatment packets, and other much needed supplies for those affected.
St. Philippians, God is calling upon us to give generously to help Water Mission with these efforts to provide the survivors of this storm with the gift of clean water. And thanks to the Friess family of Texas, who has promised to match up to $1,000,000 in a grant for Water Mission’s Hurricane Dorian relief efforts, your donation can have twice the positive impact.
You may also mail your donations to
Water Mission, P.O. Box 63320, Charlotte, NC 28263-3320, or drop them by the church office (please make checks out to Water Mission with Hurricane Dorian Relief in the memo line), and we will forward them to Water Mission.
The King will answer them, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” ––Matthew 25:40

Summer Surprise
by Scharlene Ringer
My granddaughter Grace, who lives in California, spends two weeks with Doug and me every summer without her parents. At a very early age, around two, she fell in love with Jesus. She learned to read at three out of the Jesus Storybook Bible, and now at 11, she is reading the “real” Bible. She loves to play “Bible Bottecelli,” a game we made up where we guess characters in the Bible. She knows more than I do about the Old Testament kings, and at the beach she makes Bible scenes out of shells she finds. Because of the grandparenting ministry events and Brian McGreevy’s C.S. Lewis class, Doug and I are learning to be intentional about our grandparenting the way Jesus wants us to.
This summer when Grace stayed with me the first two weeks in July, I was looking for something for her to do at St. Philip’s, knowing that most children’s activities were in recess, a well deserved rest for the teachers and leaders. I was surprised, then, to see an announcement in the eSPIRE about a Tuesday evening program led by David Gilbert. Before his program, at 5:00 p.m., was an opportunity for a Bible study with Sarah Silcox, just for girls Grace’s age. This program was called “Against the Tide,” and it fit right into our schedules between zip-lining and the waterpark. The first meeting was the week before Grace returned to California. I emailed David and Sarah and asked them if she could come, even though she would only be able to attend once. I received immediate warm responses from both, saying she was welcome. They would be on the lookout.

Kanuga Registration is OPEN!
The annual parish retreat at Kanuga, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Hendersonville, NC, is a time of spiritual enrichment and nourishment for parishioners of all ages. There are daily opportunities for worship and fellowship, and there’s also time for you to explore the grounds and the Hendersonville area on your own if you’d like.
This year’s speaker is the Rev. Dr. Kendall Harmon, Canon Theologian for the Diocese of South Carolina, and the theme of the weekend is “Graciously Engaging the Consuming Fire: Biblical Reflections on Prayer.”
TONIGHT at 7:00 after worship and supper!
Come join us in the Parlor of the Ministries Hall (corner of Church and Queen Streets) for a weekly excursion into one of C.S. Lewis’s most interesting and accessible books,
The Screwtape Letters, led by the Rev. Brian McGreevy. A fictional correspondence between a senior devil and a junior devil about how to tempt Christians away from their faith, this book also serves as an engaging and challenging primer on what it means to follow Jesus in a hostile culture. All are welcome!

Do you have a child in 4th-12th grade? The sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses of the Canterbury and St. David Choirs rehearse Thursday evenings September through May and sing in church monthly. To schedule a simple audition for your child, please email director Jo Hethcox by clicking below.
