The Summer CME Weekend Getaway in Okoboji is a long standing tradition at the IAFP and we are heading back to Okoboji in 2020 for all the fun, sun, education, and socialization this event is known for! This meeting is truly a family affair where there will be plenty of time for you to relax, explore and enjoy all the area has to offer. We will offer three, half-day CME sessions during this weekend beginning at 12:30 on Thursday and from 8:00 to 1:00 on Friday and Saturday. We are excited to return to Bridges Bay Resort for the 2020 meeting!

This session meets the Iowa Board of Medicine CME Requirements on End of Life Care (Iowa licensed physicians are required to complete 2 hours of a Category 1 activity in end of life care every five years. This requirement, which became effective August 17, 2011, is for physicians who provide primary care to patients. 
 
AGENDA 
Faculty: James Bell, MD, Medical Director, Palliative Care, St Luke's Hospital

Lecture 1: Palliative Care and Hospice Essentials
At the end of the lecture, the participant will
  • Understand the difference between palliative care and hospice care
  • Have a working knowledge of the universal principles of "primary palliative care"
  • Be aware of the specific circumstances calling for referral to a palliative care team
 
Lecture 2: Goal setting: The Family Meeting
At the end of the lecture, the participant will
  • Understand the essential elements of the family meeting for goals of care discussion
  • Be able to incorporate those elements efficiently into a limited office visit
  • Learn strategies for managing challenging situations such as requests to "do everything"
 
Lecture 3: The role of the Family Physician in the application of new technologies in advanced disease
At the conclusion of the lecture, the participant will
  • Recognize new technologies that patients may encounter as they face advanced disease
  • Understand the role of the family physician in supporting patients and families in these situations
  • Be able to support patients in decision making using specific communication tools
Physician Business Leadership Certification Program
Providers today are facing an era of change unlike any before. During times like these, physicians must show innovation and focused decision-making abilities. That's why IHA, with the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative, Iowa Medical Society and Iowa Academy of Family Physicians, developed the Physician Business Leadership Certification Program to help physicians gain new competencies to equip them to successfully lead in today's complex health care environment.

Certification is achieved by attending quarterly in-person sessions and participating in networking and other industry and association activities. The 2020 program schedule is:

Session 1: Tuesday, Feb. 25 (in conjunction with IHA Hospital Day on the Hill)
Session 2: Tuesday, Apr. 28
Session 3: Thursday, June 18
Session 4: Monday, Sept. 14

All in-person sessions are scheduled in Des Moines. Each session features a lineup of well-known physician faculty and respected health care leaders. Content is designed around three focus areas:

* Foundational Leadership Skills: Applicable strategies to develop fundamental leadership and business skills.
* Equipping for Health Care Today: Topics helping physicians improve their execution, efficiency, and effectiveness.
* Hot Topics: Issues in health care delivery affecting physicians, such as the opioid crisis and behavioral health issues.

Support Needed to Enhance Cancer Survivorship Plan Practices 
The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), Iowa Cancer Consortium (the Consortium) and the University of Iowa would like to work with you on a project.
 
Project funding has been received from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to support enhancing cancer survivorship plan practices. Specifically, we are interested in getting feedback from primary care providers (family medicine physicians, physician assistants, and/or nurse practitioner) and administrators on how cancer survivorship care plans can be improved for utilization in primary care settings.
 
We will be able to provide nominal compensation to individual responders. Organizations with at least two providers and two administrators participating will also be eligible for approximately $ 3 ,000 in funding , with further funding available for further participation.
 
We are interested in phone or in-person interviews of about 45 minutes where we would discuss the care of cancer survivors within your health system. Our ultimate goal is to develop recommendations for how to update survivorship care plan templates and practices. The timeframe for the project is February 1, 2020 to May 30, 2020.

ABFM: Application Open for 
April 2020 Certification Exam
A reminder the application is open for the April 2020 administration of the Certification Exam.  The ABFM invites you to to explore the option to participate in the Family Medicine Longitudinal Assessment pilot if you are due to recertify in 2020 (certification period ends December 31, 2020).

Free Opioid Overdose 
Reversal Drug Available 
The IDPH and University of Iowa Health Care (UIHC) have partnered to launch a new program called "Tele-Naloxone" that will now provide FREE naloxone (the opioid overdose reversal drug) by mail to all Iowans who want or need it. 

Also, in coordination with this program's launch the website www.naloxoneiowa.org is now live and houses the following information: 
  • Instructional video on the use of naloxone 
  • Iowa naloxone directory and mapping tool 
  • TeleNaloxone appointment request form
