How much are they?
Each mum voucher is $12 and is good for one 2-gallon jumbo size hardy mum.

Where do I get my mums?

Where is Wheeler Gardens located?
They have two locations. One is located at 1925 S. Bedford Ave in Springfield; close to the east Sam's Club. The other is located at 454 State Highway EE in Ozark.

What colors do they have?
They have several shades of bronze, orange, white, purple, red, and yellow. All colors available at both locations.

Teacher Feature: Mrs. Kowalczyk
Mrs. Kowalczyk teaching Early Learners about warm colors in Art class.

What is your name?
Rachel Kowalczyk

What do you teach at The Summit?
I am the long-term Art substitute.

How long have you been working in education?
I taught five years before staying home with our babies for seven years, and I'm excited to be back at it.

Where did you go to college?
I graduated from the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville.

What was your major?
I hold a Bachelor of Education degree in Art Education.

When you were in school, what was your favorite subject?
My favorite subjects were English and Art.

Now that you're a teacher, what is your favorite lesson to teach?
Oh my gosh! That's incredibly difficult to narrow down! My favorite lessons are those where the students are engaged and enjoying the process of what they're working towards.

What made you want to become a teacher?
Throughout my entire life, teachers have had a huge impact on me and have helped shape me into the person I am today; I've always wanted to give back somehow.

What is your favorite thing about teaching at The Summit?
I could tell immediately how amazing this school is due to the students and group of faculty. The Summit is truly one-of-a-kind! Students are kind, courteous to all, respectful, easy going, self starters, fun to be around, and the list goes on. The faculty has been so supportive, generous, gracious, and willing to help. Did I already say this list could go on and on?!

What makes a good day at school?
A good day is a day where every student is actively engaged in their learning, enjoying themselves, feeling "seen", and knowing they're valuable.

If you could take your class on a field trip anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I would go anywhere people live differently than we do in hopes that students' minds would be broadened to the world which surrounds them.

If you had a time machine, what period of time would you travel to (or the future)?
I think I would go back to the 1920s/1930s because it looks like fun, and I'd know what to expect.

What's something you think everyone should try at least once?
Anything they're afraid or nervous about trying that won't hurt them.

What is the next book on your "to be read" list?
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens.
Around Campus

Fall Nature Collages

Students are making nature collages in Art class! Cooler weather is finally here, and students are enjoying exploring the Big Backyard for natural materials to make their fall nature collages. Here, Early Learners share their findings (sorry, squirrels!).

Mrs. Kowalczyk has been teaching students about warm and cool colors and has enjoyed seeing the learning in action outside. She says, "They had so much fun collecting and would stop and exclaim, 'Look! Look! I found a leaf! It's cold green! Look! Look! I found a warm flower!'"

Monarch Butterflies in the Pollinator Garden

Exciting news! Monarch butterflies have found our new pollinator garden! In addition to the many other native butterflies and pollinators observed this summer, yesterday we discovered tiny, larval monarch butterfly caterpillars on the swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata).

The caterpillars provide students the opportunity to learn about the butterfly life cycle, coevolution, and migration (this is their last hatch of the summer before they migrate). It is also an opportunity to teach students about the habitat we're creating in the Big Backyard, how it's providing a beneficial food source for native insects, and how monarchs are just one of many specialist insect species that need to feed on a particular plant to survive.

All plants in the pollinator garden were selected because they are a host plant for specific insect species. Unlike most gardens, we WANT insects to eat this one!

Promotional Video Update

Double Jump Media was on campus, Wednesday, September 9th, filming a new promotional video for The Summit. Mr. Powers gave a passionate interview about how much he loves learning with his students every day and was delighted by all the interesting film equipment!

The crew was so impressed with our courteous and engaged students and commented on what a great time they had learning more about The Summit. Thank you, everyone, for showing our guests what The Summit Difference is all about! We're so proud of our students and our school!

Participation is completely optional and free of charge. Teachers also use the directory as a reference for potential guest speakers in their classrooms and/or field trip opportunities. If you are interested in being listed in the Family Business Directory, please use this link to submit your information.
