Parks & Rec Uses 'Downtime' for Upkeep and Improvements
This week, we start our report by visiting the Florida Department of Health Data Dashboard for the number of positive cases of COVID-19 by ZIP code.

PARKS & RECREATION UPDATE
With a strong emphasis on safe and responsible strategies for park use, the City of South Miami Parks & Recreation Department today reopened select parks for limited active and passive use only, from sunrise to sunset.

Working in collaboration with Miami-Dade County and other neighboring municipalities, the reopening process will be gradual, as we begin moving toward full recreation and sports programming. This approach in intended to protect park users and staff – and help mitigate the risk of resurgence of COVID-19 in our community.

State of Emergency

It has been nearly six weeks since the City Manager announced a city-wide State of Emergency and the closure of all municipal parks. However, it’s been anything but downtime for Parks & Rec staff as they have continued to work diligently behind the scenes keeping our park system clean, safe, and ready for the day when residents could return.

Look Before You Leap
And that day is here – although many restrictions are still in place. Specifically, the Aquatic Center, Dog Park, Gibson-Bethel Community Center, and the Senior Center will remain closed until further notice, as will restrooms, recreation buildings, and picnic shelters.

Many other amenities and areas also remain closed, so before heading out, be sure to review the rules and regulations outlined here. Please note that the May 2 Cinco De Barko is cancelled.

During the closure period, certain essential operations managed by the Parks & Rec Division were ongoing, such as meal delivery services to active program seniors, park improvements, and selective maintenance.

The department’s live virtual-fitness program also remains in place, every Tuesday and Thursday via Facebook . Additional virtual classes are in the works, so please “Like” and “Follow” us on Facebook. To keep up with divisional news, get quick instructions here on how to subscribe to our newsletter.

Upgrades & Improvements

When the parks fully reopen, you will notice new playground safety surface improvements at Fuchs, Murray , and Palmer Parks , as well as enhancement to the indoor basketball gymnasium and restrooms at the Gibson-Bethel Community Center.
