 Is the end just a new beginning?
Somewhere around 2009 I was approached by Bill Carberry, the founding father of AFRA. He asked me to run for a position as board member for AFRA. To my surprise I got elected and I've got involved in shaping the future of the aircraft recycling industry. After 2 re-elections, becoming vice-president and finally becoming president 4 years ago it's now time for me to leave the board after 9 years. But as it is with our industry, it's not an end it's just a new beginning.
The last 9 years the association changed. There are many successes, to name just two. We made giant steps on professionalism. We are globally recognized as the go-to association for aircraft recycling by associations such as IATA and ICAO. Secondly, we introduced committees, and as a result more people are now actively contributing to AFRA than ever before. Am I happy with these results? Yes, because some of those things I would not have imagined. Also, because of being so close to the fire I know that many AFRA things seem simple on the outside, but they did ask, and some are asking, and a lot of time and effort of people to develop and sustain. But I'm not leaving the board and the new president without any challenges. They got things to do.
Membership numbers did not grow as much as I wanted. Almost all companies that disassemble aircraft are members of AFRA, we should be proud of that. We are, however, still struggling to get lessors, airlines and other member groups to join. They are obviously not core members but do benefit of the work we are doing. We tried many things and booked some success, but I feel that more should be possible and is needed.
On the government affairs side of things AFRA is at a turning point. We know that our friends of ASA really made steps forward when their ASA-100 accreditation program got endorsed by the FAA. There seems to be an option now for AFRA to also get some sort of government endorsement. This option was also a workshop during the recent AFRA annual meeting and I enjoyed discussing with all of you on the subject.
Of course I'm not leaving my successor with difficulties without a solution. There are two things I'm very proud of and that I'm sure will help AFRA grow and are under development. One is the first (of many) annual reports that will be finalized soon that will be a great source of information and reflection for ourselves but also for the complete aviation sector. The second is the indicator that is being developed so we will have an industry wide, universal way of measuring our success because one thing became clear to me when representing AFRA. The aviation sector does a fantastic job in recycling the aircraft that have flown people around the world many times compared to other industries.
I'm looking forward to being active within AFRA outside the board and I'm sure that the (new) board and the new president will do a great job. I will keep on doing my best in helping the community but in other ways. It's an end to a privilege of being your president but also a beginning of new things and new energy for the association.

Dear AFRA Members,
I hope y'all (adding a little Texas flair) are having a great and profitable summer so far. If you and I haven't met yet, I look forward to crossing paths in the near future, but for those that don't know me, my name is Brent Webb. I have recently been elected by the board to represent AFRA as the President.
First, I must start off by thanking our outgoing president Derk-Jan van Heerden for his time and service on the board. He leaves a remarkable legacy as he has served as President of the board for six years. I would also like to welcome the new members of the board, Matthew Davis of Mastermelt Alloy, Alasdair Gledhill of ELG Haniel Metals Corp. and Seamus O'Donnell of ComAv Asset Management.
For those that were able to attend the ASA/AFRA "Future Forward" conference this year in Montreal, what a wonderful event. The weather was very pleasant and the information that was disseminated was tremendous. We had a great presentation by our auditors of our newly released BMP version 4.0, as well as a presentation by our R&D Committee on our dismantle metrics being developed by Envisa. Rounding out our workshops were an open discussion on EU Waste Regulations and our always popular Aircraft Valuation panel. All the panelist contributed to making this year's event one of the best yet. Also, I would be remiss if I did not thank all the of the AFRA sponsors who continue to not only make a monetary commitment, but we also find them contributing time on many of the AFRA committees. While the conference marks a mid-point in our year, our work is no wear near half way over and I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and continuing the work of those who have laid the path before us.

Government Affairs Committee
The Government Affairs Committee is tracking the work of the European Parliament following the recent elections. Within the EP, the main committee relevant for AFRA is the ENVI Committee. The Chair of the ENVI Committee, Pascal Canfin from Renew Europe, is a French MEP. He used to be part of the Greens and Director of World Wildlife Fund, before joining the French political party La République En Marche. In July, Pascal Canfin's top priorities for the ENVI Committee were revealed: trade agreements, carbon neutrality and independence from lobbies.

The R&D committee is open to any AFRA member and all are welcome to participate in the next committee call on September 11. R&D Committee calls take place monthly, on the second Wednesday of every month. The committee is also finalizing the data project and working to refine the KPIs for the recycling metric project. AFRA BMP Development Committee
This committee takes the lead in reviewing the AFRA Best Management Practice for Management of Used Aircraft Parts and Assemblies and for Recycling of Aircraft Materials (BMP) document.

- Coordinating member feedback to review and revise AFRA's BMP manual

AFRA Communications Committee
This committee works on various projects, including fine-tuning our membership recruitment messaging, contributing photos and content to industry magazine articles, and guiding staff with conference programming selections.
Main project(s):
- Contributing content for press releases, industry publications, and AFRA platforms
- Providing feedback with conference topics and speakers
- Coordinating media partnerships to provide benefits to members (cross-promotion of industry events)
Government Affairs Committee
This committee works to better address the policy developments and regulatory issues that impact the aircraft recycling and dismantling industry, and to proactively promote the AFRA Best Management Practices guide. This program is guided by a professional government affairs consultant, with collaboration and participation from the Government Affairs Committee members and AFRA staff.
Main project(s):
- Focused engagement in EU government affairs
- Tracking relevant updates and legislation in US, EU, and Canada
- Engagement with allied industry organizations ICAO, IATA, etc.
