Ingathering Sunday
Come celebrate the beginning of a new congregational year -everyone is welcome! This all-ages service will include a water ceremony (bring a small amount of water from a special place in your life) and a story about telling stories, featuring the Society's Board members. At the end of the service, we will move out to the front lawn to dedicate the new signboard.

"Why Are We Here?"
Where did Unitarian Universalism come from - and where are we headed? Some say that UUism is no longer a religion, but something else entirely. Reflections on how the story of our liberal/progressive religious tradition intertwines with the nation's history, and our role at this pivotal moment.

Sunday, September 1 at 10 a.m.

Guest Minister:  Rev. Jennifer Pader
Worship Associate:  Woody Fulton

"Dog Spelled Backwards"
Fifty years after landing on the moon and 30 years after the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope, do we still believe that we are alone? Is there a force greater than us? We are called to examine what constitutes spiritual "faith" -- and what that term may encompass for contemporary Unitarian Universalists.

Rev. Jennifer Pader, M.Div, STM, LMSW was the Affiliate Minister at the Fourth Universalist Society in Manhattan from 2006-2018, and the part-time Guest Minister at the Mount Mansfield Unitarian Universalist Fellowship during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 church years. She is a graduate of McGill University, Union Theological Seminary, The Hunter College School of Social Work, and the William Alanson White psychoanalytic institute in Manhattan. Jennifer is from Greenwich Village (Manhattan), and relocated to Burlington with her husband William Davidson five years ago. Rev. Pader is a friend of FUUSB who has provided pastoral, pulpit and emergency coverage for some of our ministers in recent years.

From the Immigration Justice Team
Kim Watkin

Can you make a difference in the life of an asylum seeker on the southern border?

The Immigration Justice Team (IJT) of the FUUSB has found an opportunity for our congregation to answer "yes" to that question. IJT member Bria Yazic worked with the organization Al Otro Lado last spring in providing Know Your Rights training and other support systems for asylum seekers in Tijuana and southern California. It is through her work that we have learned of the case of Israel.

Israel is a 45-year-old asylum seeker from Mexico. He is kind and resilient. In early 2019 he crossed the San Diego/Tijuana border in order to seek safety from gang members. He has been detained at a correctional facility in Louisiana since February. Israel was denied parole, and was found ineligible for bond. He is therefore required to fight his case from detention, in a state with very low asylum grant rates. A member of the Immigration Justice Team was able to find a low-bono lawyer for Israel, who has been putting his case together and will represent him in court. His lawyer, Lara Nochomovitz, is based in Ohio and needs money for her flights. Having legal representation makes an asylum seeker five times more likely to win their asylum case. Anything you can give to help with the lawyer fees is extremely helpful!

The IJT will be tabling in the Parlors after the Sunday service during the month of September to cover Israel's lawyer costs.  Connect with Kim Watkin at [email protected] or Bria Yazic at [email protected] with any questions.

Childcare Providers Needed for the Fall!
In order to warmly welcome families with young children to our congregation we offer Sunday morning childcare for infants and toddlers all year round, and for children of all ages in the summer. Taking a monthly shift in the Nursery is a great way to serve the community, connect with families, and make a little money! Here's a  link to the job description.  If you think you would be a good fit, contact Margo Whitcomb, Faith Development Assistant, at  [email protected] .
