A Moment of Mindfulness

What are you doing right now? Chances are you're doing more than one thing. Multi-tasking isn't just tiring, it can affect your ability to remember things and even change your neurological pathways because of the brain's ability to adapt (neuroplasticity).

So ... take a moment now to stop. Just close your eyes and focus on your breathing for one minute. Return to the everyday bustle, but try to commit to at least three moments of mindfulness each day.

3 Tips for Backpack Safety

Children--or anyone--should follow these simple tips when wearing a backpack.

1. Wear both straps
Using one strap causes one side of the body to bear the weight of the backpack. By wearing two shoulder straps, the weight of the backpack is better distributed across the shoulders.

2. Wear the backpack over the strongest mid-back muscles
The backpack should rest evenly in the middle of the back.   Straps should not be too loose, and the backpack should not extend below the low back.  Adjust shoulder straps to allow the child to put on and take off the backpack without difficulty and allow free movement of the arms.

3. Lighten the load
Keep the load at 10-15% or less of the child's bodyweight. Carry only those items that are required for the day or find a new lightweight backpack. Organize the contents of the backpack by placing the heaviest items closest to the back. Some students have two sets of books to avoid carrying the heavy books to and from school. A backpack with wheels can also help if the child has to carry greater than 15% of their bodyweight.

How a Physical Therapist Can Help
A physical therapist can help you choose a proper backpack and fit it specifically to your child. Children come in all shapes and sizes, and some have physical limitations that require special adaptations.

Additionally, a physical therapist can help improve posture problems, correct muscle imbalances and treat pain that can result from improper backpack use. Physical therapists can also design individualized fitness programs to help children get strong and stay strong--and carry their own loads!

Client of the Month: Tiffany

Before joining Healthtrax, Tiffany Porter's workouts consisted of going to Planet Fitness three days a week, doing 30 mins of cardio on a machine and 30 mins of weight training. She had also tried boxing lessons, but felt it was too intense.

Since joining Healthtrax, Tiffany works out 5 to 6 days a week, which includes Danny's SGT Kettlebell class on Saturday mornings and personal training with him on Wednesdays. She does a variety of workouts including Olympic lifting--"fun and challenging"--and some CrossFit moves--"intimidating." Her  nutrition has changed, too: "I've learned how to count macros and try to eat healthy, whole foods that include protein, healthy fats and carbs in every meal."

"I've definitely become stronger since working with Danny because he pushes me past my comfort zone in every session and class. I've lost about 10 pounds since joining, but more importantly I've lost visceral fat and gained muscle."

Tiffany says she learns something new in every session. "Danny is very supportive, encouraging, fun and lives the lifestyle he's teaching. The hour goes by quickly and I walk out feeling like I could move a mountain and that I've pushed my body to do something I never thought it could do. He's the best trainer I've worked with and I appreciate everything he does for his clients. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to hire a trainer. You won't be disappointed!"
