An urgent message from CABE's partner, Californians Together...

|
Yesterday, the Trump Administration released the finalized rule change to “Public Charge” within the Department of Homeland Security. The rule change is scheduled to be published officially this Wednesday and will go into effect 60 days later on October 15, 2019.
This rule change is yet another salvo by the current federal administration in their continued assault on immigrant families. The Public Charge rule is a public benefits test used during the application process to obtain or, under very limited circumstances, keep legal immigration status. Under the
rewritten rule
,
immigrant families, including millions of immigrants legally residing in the U.S., could potentially be punished for accessing nutrition, housing, and medical care programs.
In light of the many recent tragedies, including racially-motivated mass shootings and immigration raids in Mississippi, this federal policy change may feel like “yet another thing" to worry about. For that reason, we wanted to share that many organizations, including Californians Together, are working together through the California Protecting Immigrant Families Coalition to ensure that
trusted information and resources
about public charge are available for immigrant-serving organizations and agencies.
Additionally, we want to remind you that California has enacted
state laws and required local policies
designed to protect immigrant students and their families in our schools. Yet policy without implementation is meaningless, and that is why we encourage schools to take proactive steps to create
safe and welcoming environments
for immigrant students and their families.
The time has come again for us to step up and stand with our immigrant families. As the new school year starts, let’s stand together to make it clear that this mean-spirited attack against families that need support does not match the values that this country was built on.
