Trinity United Methodist Church
The Messenger
September 2019
Thank you all so much for your kind thoughts, your prayers and your cards following the death of my Dad, Phillip Wise, on August 4.  It means a great deal to me and my family to know that you are surrounding us with your love.  We are thankful for God's gracious presence in his life and in ours as we go through the difficult days ahead remembering that Daddy is with God  and his suffering is over.  A Celebration of Life is being planned for October 18, 1:00 pm, at Lancaster Village, 4138 Market St. NE, here in Salem.  I am trying to take care of  the matters of my Dad's estate and family issues, which means I may not be at the church as often, but I am always reachable by phone.

September is an exciting month, with all kinds of ways to worship and serve, so be sure to mark these events on your calendars and plan to join in.  I would especially encourage you to attend the Open Door Churches Worship Celebration on Sunday, September 8 (see info below). There will not be worship at Trinity or any of the other Open Door Churches that day so we can all be together!

Please don't hesitate to call me  or the church office, if you have questions about  anything in this newsletter.

      See you in church!

      Blessings,
      Pastor Sandy

DICK WEISSMAN is Coming to Trinity
Sunday, September 29th, 1:00 p.m.

Dick Weissman was born in Philadelphia, where he began piano lessons at the age of 7. His musical career was interrupted by a teenage career as a semi-professional ping pong player. Following the advice in Pete Seeger's banjo book, Dick bought a five string banjo at a pawn shop in the skid row section of town, abandoning it when he couldn't figure out how to tune it without breaking strings. While attending Goddard College in Vermont, Dick met Lil Blos, who offered to teach him how to play the banjo. At about the same time Dick won a guitar in payment of a gambling debt that was part of his ping pong expertise.
Spending his junior year in New York and New Mexico, Dick met the gospel blues guitarist Gary Davis in New York, and had the great experience of sitting in on a number of occasions with Gary at the house of Tiny Ledbetter, Leadbelly's niece. Dick studied with guitarist Jerry Silverman during this New York sojourn, and met the superb banjoist Stu Jamieson in Albuquerque.
After graduating from college, Dick moved to New York, and spent the next 4 years alternating between attending graduate school and becoming active in the folk music scene in Greenwich Village. Eventually he dropped out of Columbia, performed with Happy Traum, did a 2 week gig at Folk City opening for Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry, and with John Phillips and Scott McKenzie formed the folk-pop band The Journeymen. 3 1/2 years, 3 Capital albums and several hundred concerts later, Dick moved back to New York and became a studio musician, record producer and songwriter.
Suggested donation for the concert is $5.00
Proceeds go to the
Lord's Cupboard Foodbank

Your HELP is needed
  1. School Supplies - The school supply bargains are now available in the stores! Please either shop for school supplies and bring them to church or make a donation for "School Supplies". We would like to help our neighborhood children with supplies to start back to school.
  2. Christmas Bags - Small toys for boys and girls are especially needed plus new or slightly used children's books and small items for boys and girls (such as headbands, bows, small cars, cards, etc).

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

If you have questions or comments please talk to me, put a note in my church box or email me at [email protected].

When have you been overwhelmed with gratefulness for God? Remember how you felt and what you did because of it. How is the Holy Spirit nudging you to share God's love generously with others? Take time prayerfully to consider how God is calling you to give and build God's kingdom, doing what matters to God.

In that reality of God's love for you, consider how God is calling you to act in gratefulness. How will you use the resources you have not to build God's kingdom?
