A Summer of Relationships
and Witness
We celebrate the summer ministries of Parkway UCC. Patti Parker led a group in regularly providing fresh, home-cooked noon meals to the students at the Sunnyside Freedom Summer experience.
Robert Reister, Jon Sundell, and a team of volunteers provided games and stories for children and youth at Weatherwood Court several evenings in July and August.
Our Community Engagement Team with the support of summer intern Kristan Pitts offered a cookout and community building event at the beginning of the summer, offered school supply distribution on Sunday, August 18, and facilitated the presence of the WSFCS nutrition program daily hot meals at Noon each day at Weatherwood Court.
Our conversational Spanish teachers Gabriella and Hank worked with about a dozen of us offering introductory Spanish exposure.
Our Justice Team organized a Lights for Liberty vigil in July in witness to our heart-break and call for change around U.S. detention and deportation policy.
Many individuals visited other worship services throughout the summer to offer insight into Parkway’s worship experience.
About nine Parkway people participated in a July training, hosted by us, of the Racial Equity Institute.
Our youth offered an insightful lunch report in July about their experience with Reach Beyond Mission refugee experience in Austin, Texas.
Seven Parkway individuals worked with the Lewisville Permaculture Research Center on Saturday, August 17 to create a series of rock catch basins called Zuni Bowls to help hold the water from our parking lot.

Sunday, September 1:
We worship with the theme of “Human Work and Creation” on this Labor Weekend, reading from Ecclesiastes 2: 24-26.
Sunday, September 8:
9:45 am Second Sunday Conversation: Panel Discussion with participants in this summer’s Racial Equity Institute training. We kick off our monthly Second Sunday series this year hearing from Parkway folks who went through REI training. We’ll ask them how the experience has changed their way of seeing and what ways the training might influence our life together at Parkway. This year’s focus for these conversations will be “Equipping for the Vision of a Multi-racial and Multi-cultural Church”
In worship on this Sunday we celebrate with the theme “Identity in Creation” exploring themes from Psalm 139: 1-6, 13-18 and attention to our senses in interacting with the created order.
Sunday, September 15:
We worship with the theme “Storm Sunday” as we also share in a time of extended silence. We read Bible stories of storms including Psalm 29 and Luke 8:22-25 as we seek a contemplative rooting in all the various storms of life, earth, and human community. We will have communion and anointing at the close of this service.
Sunday, September 22:
Outdoor Worship at Shelter #1 at Miller Park. We’ll gather on this Floral and Fauna Sunday for camp songs led by Jon Sundell and exploration of our relationships with the plant and animal communities of our bioregion. We’ll have a picnic potluck following the service.
Sunday, September 29:
On this Cosmos Sunday, we will consider the ways we can honor the indigenous inhabitants of the land upon which we live and acknowledge the history of abuse of these cultures, reading Proverbs 8:22-31 and Colossians 1: 15-20.
A worship response discussion will happen right after worship.
We will NOT have potluck
after worship.

Parkway United Church of Christ
Occasional Music Team
My name is Sterling Garris. I was a former educator, principal and CEO in the Public schools in North Carolina as well as the Public and Character Schools in Pennsylvania. I have recently retired for the second time! Praise God!
Since my retirement and relocation back home here in North Carolina, I am looking forward to working and serving more in the church ministry by the way of leading songs in worship. I have worked in that capacity in churches in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and more recently in Delaware.
I believe that Parkway United Church of Christ is a Progressive Church and a congregation that believes in equality for all people and advocates the rights for immigrants, people of color etc. Christ Himself showed unconditional love to ALL those He encountered!
My vision for a music team here at Parkway United Church of Christ is one I believe will address and complement the needs and vision for the church. (Only an addition and not a substitute!)
The Team will focus on ministering to the congregation in song. I pray to have the following on the team: Vocalist, Pianist, Guitarist, Drummer etc. These will be individuals dedicated to witnessing for CHRIST through music.
We will have a brief gathering after worship on Sunday, September 8 for those interested or you canemail me at
srayguy12@aol.com
. We look forward to our first leadership in worship on Sunday, October 27.
Let's Be Blessed!
Sterling Garris

Three Part Awareness Series:
Indigenous Nations and
the Church
Our Justice Team is offering a three-part discussion series this fall on
Wednesday evenings, 7 pm ( September 18, September 25, October 2).
We’ll look at something called the Doctrine of Discovery which continues to influence court decisions about treaties, property, and Indian rights to this day. We’ll look at ways of giving honor and acknowledgement to our history when we gather as the church. We’ll be informed by the suggestions of First Nations leaders about how to move forward with new imagination and relationship.

A note from Susan Avery...
Dear Parkway family…I am very grateful for my wonderful church family here at Parkway who has helped me survive over the years.
I recently had my hours and pay cut at my present job and now find myself in financial difficulty. I am trying to find work to supplement my income and am hoping that you may be able to help me. I can assist with typing, personal astrology charting, and am an accomplished genealogist who would love to help people with their search for their ancestors and give them a typed report of the findings. There are many other things I can do. Please let me know if I can be of assistance to you in any way.
Thank you,
Susan Avery

Stranger-to-Neighborhood:
Please join us, and invite your families, friends, and congregations, to a
Stranger-to-Neighbor Gathering & Letter-Writing
on
Sunday, September 15 from 3-5 pm at Trinity Presbyterian Church (1416 Bolton St., Winston-Salem NC 27103)
! I have attached flyers in English and Spanish.
All are invited to this bilingual (Spanish / English) program to:
- Connect with immigrant neighbors and allies,
- Learn about local organizing, led by the Latinx immigrant community, to secure safety, dignity, and opportunity, and
- Act by writing our NC Senators in support of H.R. 6, the American Dream & Promise Act of 2019, which would provide a pathway to citizenship for immigrants eligible for DACA, TPS, and DED. An information sheet and sample letter is available at: https://tinyurl.com/DreamAndPromise2019-NC.
Local Latinx faith and community leaders will share about opportunities to support local organizing and legislative advocacy to secure the rights of immigrant neighbors. We will also hear from recipients of DACA and TPS about how these programs have enabled them to contribute to our community, the consequences of losing protections if Congress does not act, and the importance of a pathway to citizenship.
Light refreshments will be served, and child care is available. Our letters will be sent as a follow-up to a legislative visit planned by members of NC Latino Power for early September. For more information please contact me at
meganmgregory1@gmail.com
or 847-287-7794. Thank you!

The Big Sweep
Saturday, October 5 at 9 am
Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful is coordinating the 2019 annual Big Sweep waterway cleanup on Saturday October 5 from 9AM to noon and we need volunteers to help clean up local neighborhoods, parks, schools and streams. Pick up a brochure at Parkway with all the information about how to register. A liability waiver must also be signed and sent in.
My sister Andrea and I have done this several times. Its fun and we all know that it's important. This year we've been assigned to help clean up Hanes Park, so join us on October 5 for a few hours. We work at our own pace and pick up trash, basically. If you want to help in the creek, tall rubber boots are recommended. Bring work gloves and a hat, too! Questions, call Kate Mewhinney at 336-749-3464 (evenings) or at
mewhinka@gmail.com
. To get more information from the city, contact George Stilphen at (336) 403-7824 or at
