A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
Making Senses

"See, I set before you today a blessing and a curse." Why does Parashat Re'eh begin with the imperative word "see!"? What does "seeing" have to do with blessings and curses and, indeed, with any other part of the Torah for that matter? Perhaps nothing; perhaps everything.

Sight is an important human sense. The phrase "seeing is believing" conjures up the notion that above all, when we are able to register something with our eyes, it has an inherent veracity. On the other hand, if, as the saying goes, "the eyes are the window to the soul", then perhaps the command to "see", requires that we accept what we are seeing with our complete selves, body and soul.

This is not to say that God views sight as the most important of the senses. Indeed, our other senses are consistently being stimulated in the Torah. The Shema commands us to "hear". The senses of taste and smell are consistently being conjured; Israel is even referred to as the land of milk and honey. We are told that sacrifices made a pleasing aroma to God. When the angel is wrestling with Jacob and realizes he will not win the angel "touches" Jacobs's thigh to end the contest. Clearly our senses are not ignored by the Text, which leads me to believe that it is no accident.

The commentators discuss Parashat Re-eh as reinforcing the fact that God gave His human creations "free will". We have the choice to follow God's commandments, or not to follow them. The Parasha tells us that if we follow the commandments, we will be blessed. If we do not follow them, we will be cursed. It would seem to be a relatively simple equation. But how does God ensure that we will exercise our free will wisely?

One answer could be that when the Torah utilizes all of our senses to teach its lessons, it is telling us that there is a piece of Torah for every part of our human existence. In this way, God gives each of us the ability to receive His messages in any number of ways; stimulating the full complement of senses throughout the Torah ensures that each person is likely learn in a way that is best for her, or him. Because Free-will only works with the open dissemination of information, titillating each of our senses at one point or another, God is ensuring that we are making fully informed decisions.

So, while "seeing" may lead to "believing", "seeing" together with "hearing", "touching", "tasting", and "smelling", is likely to lead to "full understanding" which, in turn, will hopefully lead to lives lived in accordance with God's plan and a better world for all of us.

Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

On Monday, September 16 at 10:30 am Stacey Vreeland will lead our group in the JCC Library as we discuss "Lilac Girls by" Martha Hall Kelly.

New York socialite Caroline Ferriday has her hands full with her post at the French consulate and a new love on the horizon. But Caroline's world is forever changed when Hitler's army invades Poland in September 1939-and then sets its sights on France.

An ocean away from Caroline, Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish teenager, senses her carefree youth disappearing as she is drawn deeper into her role as courier for the underground resistance movement. In a tense atmosphere of watchful eyes and suspecting neighbors, one false move can have dire consequences.

For the ambitious young German doctor, Herta Oberheuser, an ad for a government medical position seems her ticket out of a desolate life. Once hired, though, she finds herself trapped in a male-dominated realm of Nazi secrets and power.

The lives of these three women are set on a collision course when the unthinkable happens and Kasia is sent to Ravensbrück, the notorious Nazi concentration camp for women. Their stories cross continents-from New York to Paris, Germany, and Poland-as Caroline and Kasia strive to bring justice to those whom history has forgotten.

We are choosing a different volunteer each month to lead our book group. We are looking for someone to lead our June 2020 book discussion. If you have any ideas for future reading, please bring the titles with you to our September 16th meeting. Please remember that we are a Jewish Book Group, so the book must either have a Jewish theme and/or a Jewish author.

I look forward to seeing you on September 16th at 10:30 am in the JCC Library.
