BACKGROUND

For a long time, facilitators have been operating in time and physical space only. But thanks to present-day technological advancements, we now have a wide range of low-cost and easy-to-use video conferencing systems, high-speed reliable network connections, and a multiplicity of communication platforms to keep connected.

These new developments open up new opportunities and challenges for global facilitators. Now we can make use of these technologies to enhance collaborations across borders. In other words, we find ourselves expected to provide services in the new environment where our "physical" and "virtual" spaces are seamlessly connected. We find we have to obtain a new set of skills to effectively facilitate virtual events and processes.

In this session, we will hear stories from three experienced online facilitators about how they are using the new technologies in their work, and together explore opportunities for using new infrastructure and technology to accelerate global collaboration and create new connects between communities. We will also talk about some of the challenges that we face in this new environment, and invite strategies for meeting them successfully.
