U.S. Ambassador to Portugal George Glass
Hosts Reception  for Portuguese Fulbright Grantees

Ambassador and Mrs. Glass hosted the 2019  Fulbright  reception at their residence on Wednesday, July 24. Close to one hundred guests, including the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, gathered to celebrate the 35 Portuguese grantees preparing to study in the United States. They were selected for the program last year and will travel to the United States this year.

During the event, Ambassador Glass delivered remarks to congratulate the grantees and to emphasize the long-term value of this exchange. He affirmed, "Senator William Fulbright once said the Fulbright program would 'bring a little more knowledge, a little more reason, and a little more compassion into world affairs,' and make no mistake - this opportunity can create a sea of goodwill on both sides of the Atlantic, anchoring this U.S.-Portuguese relationship."

The Fulbright program is the flagship educational exchange of the U.S. Department of State, managed in Portugal collaboratively by the Fulbright Commission and the U.S. Embassy. Next year, the Fulbright Commission in Portugal will celebrate its 60th anniversary.

GATEWAY FEATURED BUSINESS

Ana's Portuguese Cooking of Peabody, Massachusetts

Ana Patuleia Ortins
Meet Ana Patuleia Ortins

Ana was born and raised in Peabody, Massachusetts. In the 1930s, her father Rufino and his family emigrated to the United States from Galveias, a small town in the Alentejo region of Portugal. Rufino shared his culinary talent and passion for Portuguese food with Ana from an early age, showing her how to gut sardines and cut kale for the Caldo Verde soup. His tutelage, coupled with a zest for the traditional dishes inherited from her mother Filomena, who died when Ana was young, inspired her to learn as much as she could about her culinary roots and to document the recipes of Portuguese immigrants in her first book  Portuguese Homestyle Cooking.

In  Authentic Portuguese Cooking, Ana brings forth a deeper look into the food of her heritage. Included are recipes shared by family and friends as well as many obtained during trips to Portugal and from the Azores, the ancestral home of her husband, Philip.

Ana has an Associates Degree in Culinary Arts from the Essex Agricultural and Technical School. She has contributed articles to Fine Cooking Magazine, Portugal Magazine, Seabourne Club Herald, and most recently, the online magazine  The Cook's Cook. She teaches culinary classes and is a member of the Northeast Chapter of Les Dames d'Escoffier International and the IACP. She resides with her husband in Peabody, Massachusetts.  (Source:  Website )

Ana's cookbooks are available for sale ( Click HERE) and she is working on her third.
