May: Mental Health Awareness Month
Student Support Clinicians
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and this year the emphasis on Mental Health and wellness is more important than ever before. With that in mind, we offer you some reminders of caring for yourself, your students, and your families...
  • Make extra efforts to get good rest. With the disruption in all of our schedules, and increase in anxiety and stressors, many of us are struggling to get enough sleep, which takes a huge toll on our well-being and emotional health.
  • Set a wake up time for your family, even if you are not going anywhere.
  • Stick to a bedtime routine
  • Limit caffeine
  • Stop all screen time at least an hour before bedtime. Read instead of scrolling on the phone. Try listening to breathing / meditation apps if you need help relaxing your mind.
  •  Move your body. This will also help with being able to sleep.
  • Go for walks outdoors
  • Try a new exercise app or Youtube channel as a family
  • Throw on some music and dance! Great stress reliever for kids.
  • Connect with others. Contact at least one person outside your household each day, through a phone call, video chat, etc.
  • This is a great time to contact older relatives, who may be more isolated.
  • Help children connect also. If you are a teacher, help link students who may be isolated or don't have siblings at home.
  • Writing letters is a great way to reflect but also connect and offer support to others. Having children write letters can also develop language arts / writing skills!
  • Protect your mental health. Start to develop an awareness of what is helpful and what is hurtful for you. Notice how your mood either improves or suffers after watching certain media (including the news), listening to music, talking with different people, etc.
  • Just as you would monitor / restrict a child's online access to content, monitor your own and start to filter what is not helpful to you.
  • Build your own TOOLBOX. What has worked for you in the past? Did you used to journal? Do yoga? Garden? Bake?  Bring back those coping strategies you found helpful. Try new ones and cultivate your intake (social media, books, magazines, TV, etc.) to encourage you.
  • Access support if you need it. Many therapists and providers are offering telehealth services. Check with your insurance or primary care provider for more information about coverage and how to access, and check out the links below. With more time at home comes more opportunity to try out new strategies, and develop our support systems.  California mental health care parity law requires that health insurance policies to cover treatment for mental illness, the on same terms and conditions applied to other medical conditions. We encourage you to reach out to a provider if you feel you are struggling.
  • For concerns about students, please refer to CARE, and a clinician will reach out to the family to discuss available supports and/or offer consultation.

Congrats to the Pride JSA!
Pitman High School
Each year at Spring State conventions across the nation, the Junior State of America Foundation recognizes the most outstanding chapters in each of its jurisdictions. On Friday, May 8, the awards ceremony was done virtually due to COVD-19. Chapter excellence is measured by five grading criteria: political awareness, civic engagement/activism, leadership, community service, and JSA participation. This year, despite only being in its second year, the Pitman Junior State of America was awarded the Ernest A. Rogers Chapter of the Year Award for Northern California. This is the highest honor a chapter can receive and we’re very proud of all of our achievements. The Pitman Chapter will now be eligible to compete for the National Civic Impact Award. Shout out to Teacher Advisor, Mr. Farhadian, Pitman JSA officers Alani Hodge, Luisa Elisaia, Micah Littlepage, Kyle Eshagh, Jenna Green, Juliet Hernandez, and all of the members. #RollPride.

Thank You for Your Service!

My husband Manuel Moreno has been a truck driver for the past 20 years. I am always amazed of how much dedication he has for his job. He, like so many drivers, does not have a set schedule. There are days where his shift might begin at 2am or 10pm. His work hours are long, at times I hardly get to see him because of our schedule.  I have to say that in these difficult times I have come to truly understand how ESSENTIAL my husband and his job skill is to all of us. Essential workers like my husband are making sure people are still able to get their necessities. I am immensely proud and honored to be his wife. Thank you to all the hardworking truck drivers for driving those extra miles!

COVID-19 Updates & Resources
Herd Immunity, also known as Community Immunity, occurs when enough people in a community become immune to a disease either by receiving a vaccination or developing antibodies from a prior illness. If enough people are vaccinated, herd immunity can be reached and the spread of the disease from person to person will be unlikely, even offering some protection for people who cannot get vaccinated.
