Nurse Scholar Set to Start Fall 2019
|
|
The AgriSafe 2019 Nurse Scholar program start date (September 3, 2019) is quickly approaching and registration will be available shortly! The Nurse Scholar program is a distance learning opportunity available to rural nurses. Distance education (a total of 18 hours), provided by experienced health & safety educators will enable rural nurses to increase their knowledge base in prevention, identification and assessment of diseases related to agricultural work exposures. Classes are in the form of webinars that can be viewed live or OnDemand (your own time). Twenty tuition scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis to nurses across the country. Nurses who don't receive the scholarship are welcome to enroll in the program based on fee schedule.

Knesha Rose-Davison
, who will serve as the 72nd President of the
Louisiana Public Health Association (LPHA)!
During her tenure, she will work to focus on collaboration, advocacy, and launching the new Louisiana Public Health Journal with LSU Health Science Center School of Public Health. Knesha has been a member of LPHA since 2010, and recently served as the chair of the Health Education and Promotion committee for the past two years. With AgriSafe she has been able to share resources and information on agricultural occupation health to her public health colleagues throughout the state.

Invest in Your Health On-Site Training
|
|
AgriSafe is looking for 2-3 organizations to co-host Invest In Your Health Trainer Exchanges. Educators can be certified to train on five AgriSafe modules (targeted for ages 16-23). AgriSafe provides the course instruction and training materials. Under our open share platform, once certified, you would be free to use the training materials in your classroom setting. Our end goal is to build the capacity of local agricultural educators, rural health professionals and rural leaders to train young workers. Trainer exchanges can be scheduled at a time and location that best fits your group's needs. Consider hosting a trainer exchange in your community.

AgriSafe Welcomes New Interns
|
|
AgriSafe is pleased to announce our newest intern-
Amanda Livingston
! She will serve as the
Women's Health Outreach Coordinator
. She has spent many years educating the public on various government criteria, as well as, organizing community outreach programs. Amanda’s skills include environmental and safety hazards analysis, business management, and database development. Amanda is pursuing a master’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health with a concentration in Environmental Management at Columbia Southern University and completed her undergraduate degree in Pre-Law at National University. She lives in Houston with her husband and their daughter. Amanda is passionate about collaborating with others to be most effectual at solving problems and helping agricultural communities.

Daisy Ren
is an MPH student of Epidemiology in Tulane University, New Orleans. She is a new intern this summer for AgriSafe. She will be working with the program called
Opioid Misuse Prevention
to help with the data analysis. Her interest is data analysis, women’s health, cardiovascular disease and farmer’s health. She received medical bachelor’s degree in medical school in China and developed her interested during that time. She selected this internship opportunity to further her knowledge and experience in the field of agriculture.

Health Spotlight: Heat-Related Illness
|
|
During the summer it is important to keep in mind the risks of heat related illnesses and the prevention methods necessary to prevent heat related illnesses and fatalities. According to the CDC, heat-related deaths are one of the deadliest weather-related health outcomes in the United States. Farmworkers may be working far from water or shade, may be compensated in a way that discourages taking a break, and may be fearful of reporting any symptoms of heat related illness to supervisors.
Health and Safety Tip

Wear sunscreen, sunburn affects your body’s ability to cool down and can make you dehydrated. If you must go outdoors, protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and by putting on sunscreen. For more information:
