CWA ASKS FEDS TO STUDY IMPACT OF WATER PLAN ON LOWER KLAMATH NWR
California Waterfowl recently asked the Bureau of Reclamation to perform an Environmental Impact Statement to assess the impacts of reduced water supplies from the Klamath Project to the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge.

The letter – co-signed by the Cal-Ore Wetlands and Waterfowl Council, the Grassland Water District, the Black Brant Group and the Tulare Basin Wetlands Association – outlines the dire impacts of continued reduced water supplies.

NEW PROGRAM TO HELP MALLARDS IS PROGRESSING
Thanks to the generous donations of our supporters, we are now operational on CWA’s delayed wheat harvest program. This pilot project aims to save mallard nests by providing incentives for farmers to delay wheat harvest during nesting season.

Waterfowl Programs staff Caroline Brady, Brian Huber and Jason Coslovich have been surveying the fields of applicants to determine where incentive payments will do the most good. “We’ve seen a lot of mallards flying in and out of these fields during our surveys, so we know we’re in the right places,” Brady said.

More than 1,600 acres have been enrolled in the program, and if additional funding become available, we will enroll more fields. (You can donate here.)

Between this and our successful Egg Salvage Program, which rescues nests when harvest and field work can’t be delayed, our supporters are helping us do a world of good for California’s flagging mallard population.

Fight a bill that would prohibit possessing certain African game animals
Even if you don’t hunt in Africa, you should be concerned when California tries to curb legal hunting activities abroad by imposing huge fines for possessing the only physical mementos hunters can typically bring home from the hunt - they can't bring home the meat. SB 1175 also arbitrarily categories some animals as “iconic,” which is a dangerous precedent. Click here to learn more.
