Principal update to BHS Community
In his May 5 update to the BHS community , Mr. Wynkoop discussed:
  • Cap and Gown pickup (see writeup under SENIORS),
  • Link Leader applications (see writeup under STUDENT LIFE), and
  • Laptop availability for students (above).
Goodbye and thank you, Ms. Burr
He also thanked Assistant Principal Ms. Carrie Burr , who will be leaving BHS after 10 years working there and far more years as a coach and student.

"I wish her the absolute best in the future and frankly I have a hard time imagining what my day to day work life will be like without her as a colleague and friend," Mr. Wynkoop said.

Dr. Joseph Williams III has been he hired to replace Ms. Burr, who is leaving to become Assistant Principal at Tahoma High School. Dr. Williams has been an Assistant Principal and Principal at all school levels in the southeastern United States before recently moving to Seattle with his family.
"He is excited to become part of our community and I think that you are really going to like him," Mr. Wynkoop said.
Time to stay engaged
Additionally, he offered a rally cry for families during the building closure.
"The (closure) grading system is designed to not do harm to students, but it does require that they continue to display effort in their classes," he noted. "We need your help to either keep them engaged or help them re-engage, so that they get the A grades that we want to give them.

"Be well Beavers. We can do this. " ~ Mr. Wynkoop's letter in full .

Link Crew applications now available!
What is Link Crew? Link Crew is a national high school program that welcomes freshmen and makes them feel comfortable throughout the first year of their high school experience.
Link Crew trains members of the junior and senior class to be Link Leaders. Getting a diverse group of leaders from all corners of Ballard High School is vital to creating a group that will engage all members of the Class of 24.
As positive role models, Link Leaders are motivators, leaders and teachers who guide the freshmen to discover what it takes to be successful during the transition to high school. We are planning as if school will start like normal in the Fall, so make sure to note that these three days are 100% REQUIRED to be a Link Leader :
Tuesday, 8/25 training from 8-2; Friday, 8/28 orientation from 8-Noon and the 1st day of school, Wednesday 9/2.

If you cannot 100% commit to all of these dates, please do not fill out this application. The quality of your answers is a vital element of how Leaders will be chosen and play a big part of whether you make the cut, so take them seriously.

Current leaders need to reapply if you want to do it again.

Link Crew applications will be accepted through May 13. More info here.

Teacher Appreciation Week
We miss all the BHS staff, and we thank you for all the creative ways you reach out to our students throughout the school year and especially during the building closure.
Here's an encore of our teachers' epic video hello from April! @AG2BB!
Share your talents with the BHS Community!
Ballard High School relies heavily on parent volunteers to help BHS provide the best possible experience and opportunities for its students.

One easy way for parents to become involved in the school is through the PTSA. Our mission is to help enable an excellent educational environment for your children.

Right now, the PTSA is actively seeking BHS parents who want to get involved with our Executive Board. A variety of positions are available and some positions require little to no PTSA experience or only take a minimal amount of time. Positions can also be shared by two members. Openings include:

President
Vice President
Volunteer Coordinator
Membership Chair FILLED!
Family & Community Engagement (FACE) co-chair -- one position FILLED! , one remaining
Direct Appeal
Staff Appreciation
Grant Committee
Auction Coordinator
PTSA Website Development SPREE (Graduation Party)
Social Media Chair FILLED!

More info here . Questions? Email the Nominating Committee at bhs.ptsa.treas@gmail.com

Here's a closer look at some of the important roles that reach all facets of our school community. We hope you'll find a good fit to share your talents and time this next school year:

FACE Committee
The Family And Community Engagement (FACE) committee engages in a variety of activities to foster awareness of both the needs and resources in the Ballard High School community.

One FACE initiative is to bring speakers to our school with topics relevant to our parents, such as understanding our students' coping with stress and anxiety, or helping them be prepared for college in general life skills. We also have hosted evenings on drug awareness and teenage suicide prevention.
BHS parents role play with speaker Jody McVittie at the February PTSA General Meeting.

Thank you to Anne Siems , who is stepping down after this year, for bringing dynamic and passionate speakers to our school the past two years. We are now looking for a co-chair to fill this role.

If you would like to get more information about the FACE co-chair (speaker coordinator) role, please contact the PTSA Board Nomination Committee at  bhs.ptsa.treas@gmail.com
PTSA Volunteer Coordinator an essential role
The PTSA Volunteer Coordinator partners with PTSA committee leads and school staff to recruit, organize and support volunteers for events throughout the school year.
Last year, parents and community members helped distribute schedules, ORCA cards, lunch room pins, and locker codes to 1,200+ students ... all on the first day of school!

Without the efforts of a Volunteer Coordinator this task would seem unsurmountable. As you can see it really is a team effort, now more than ever the support of our families and community is essential to the success of our students and school.

Thank you to Melissa Elliott, who not only coordinated our school volunteers this year but also cheerfully rolled up her sleeves to support and build our community.

For more information on assisting the PTSA as Volunteer Coordinator, e mail the Nominating Committee at bhs.ptsa.treas@gmail.com .

Students! Volunteer opportunity from home
HistoryLink.org  is the first and largest encyclopedia of regional history created expressly for the Internet . The digital media editor is creating a list of articles on our site that need higher resolution images.
Volunteers are needed to search digital archives for possible images/audio/video. This would be a fun project for students and easy to do from home if they have an internet connection.
