This Monday we are excited to feature BAC Team member Jerome Torres!  Fitness has always been a part of Jerome's life from playing sports to hitting the gym at whatever military base he was stationed at.  Yet, a healthy lifestyle was really solidified for Jerome when he lost two close family members.  If they had taken better care of their health they might still be here today.  Tune in to the 6pm WBKB news tonight to see his story.

Shakeology of the Month
THE VANILLA GRANOLA BAR
It tastes like dessert, but acts like a multivitamin!

Why Shakeology?
We all struggle with food prep and getting all the nutrients we need in life every day. Shakeology solves both of those problems.  It literally fills the gaps in our daily nutrition. We still advocate eating clean, colorful, whole foods for your daily meals. Shakeology is a multivitamin in a meal.

It is quick, convenient and filled with vitamins, minerals, superfoods, probiotics, prebiotics, digestive enzymes, amino acids, antioxidants and protein. It is NOT a diet shake or a quick fix. It is whole food nutrition.

Healthy Living Recipe

GROUND CHICKEN LETTUCE WRAPS
Trust me and try this recipe. If you don't like spicy, take it out completely. Your dinner will still be full of flavor. Based on one of the essential Thai recipes, this recipe features ground chicken that is wonderfully seasoned with soy and fish sauce and served with pickled red onion, lime juice, sticky rice and fresh herbs to bring it all together. This should take you all of 30 minutes to prepare and cook. Enjoy!
Ingredients:
-1 small red onion
-¼ to 1/3 cup rice vinegar
-1 cup rice (white is traditional)
-1 and ½ cup water
-1 TBSP vegetable oil
-2 garlic cloves, minced
-1 bunch green onion (scallion), sliced on the diagonal
-1 lb. ground chicken
-Salt and pepper
-2 TBSP soy sauce
-1 tsp. fish sauce
-1 tsp. Sambal Oelek (or Sriracha)
-1 TBSP brown sugar
-1 head of washed Bibb or Butter lettuce leaves
-1 or 2 limes cut into wedges
-1 bunch of cilantro
Method:
First, thinly slice half a red onion and place in a small bowl with rice vinegar. Let it hang out in the fridge until you're ready to eat. Meanwhile, steam some white rice. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat until shimmering. Add a pound of ground chicken, two minced garlic cloves, three thinly sliced scallions (whites and greens). Season with a little salt and pepper and cook until chicken is cooked through and browned. Stir in two tablespoons of soy sauce, a teaspoon of fish sauce, a small spoonful of sambal oelek or other hot sauce (like sriracha), and a tablespoon of brown sugar, cooking until the liquid is almost completely reduced. Serve the ground chicken over rice, lime wedges, quick-pickled onions, more sambal oelek, and cilantro and the rest of the green part only of green onion. Scoop out a serving into Bibb or butter lettuce leaves. Serving size is 2 leaves. This recipe serves four.

September 2019
Healthy families are happy families.

Cheers to the start of a new school year. We had a beautiful summer in northern Michigan. Sunshine, warm weather and long days. I hope you soaked it up and have great memories from camping to the lake to carry you into the rest of the year. Getting back to school can be good for the entire household. Routine feels good.

You can make the school year even smoother by taking care of yourself. School, work, family and daily life carries stress. Your self-care, your fitness, your nutrition and your overall health are the best ways to feel stronger inside and out. I truly believe that healthy families are happier. They show more patience to each other. They have more energy for each other. If you need help getting back to your healthy routine, come see us at Bay Athletic Club. We listen, we care, we help.

Special shout out to my teammates at BAC who shared first day of school pictures (in the collage below). I respect that you wear many hats in life, from moms and dads to grandparents and caregivers. Thank you for sharing your time and talent with BAC as well. You are setting a great example for your kids that will impact them for the rest of their lives.

My own kids, Jade and Colt, are both in high school now (center picture). They are happy, healthy and thriving. They've grown up at BAC. They only know fitness as a way of life. Thank you all, teammates and members, for the positive influence you've had in their lives. They are better for it. The BAC family is one of a kind. We have never had any extended family in the community. You are important people in their lives and have filled that gap. We are all stronger together.

With love,
Trina

TIPS FROM NUTRITION EDUCATOR AMANDA FREELAND

The scale is not our enemy. The scale is just one of many measurements that tells us something about our health. The scale can and should be our friend. When it comes to nutrition we can learn a lot from the scale.

The effect that food has on our weight is different for everyone. Some people can chow on pasta and lose weight and some cannot. Some people can eat all of the crackers and cheese on the platter and not see a change in weight while others cannot.
There are no hard and fast rules as to what to eat and when during the day to see ultimate weight loss because we are all so different.
Here's what you CAN do:
  • Weigh yourself everyday. When we pay attention to our weight, those 5-10-20 extra pounds can't creep on unknowingly, we start to feel more accountable to what we are eating and we aren't surprised when we go to the doctors office and get weighed for the first time all year. Start paying attention. The more you track what you are eating, the more you will see the patterns of weight loss and weight gain over the course of time. If you eat out the night before and see the scale go up, but eat clean and drink lots of water and see it go down the next day, it was most likely sodium intake. It's empowering to become more knowledgeable about how our body works.
  • Drink up! Water is one of the things that is tried and true for everyone. The more water we drink the more easily our body can lose weight.
  • Eat your veggies. Vegetables have tons of fiber, tons of nutrients and are super low in calories. If you enjoy volume eating and don't want to see the scale go up, choose veggies most! Check out these great vegetarian recipes for some new ideas https://www.beachbodyondemand.com/blog/2b-mindset-vegetarian
  • Don't let your number define you. We are all unique human beings. We are all designed differently. The number on the scale does not determine your overall health, however, it does give us clues about what we are eating and whether or not we need to make some changes in order to see weight loss.
We all deserve to feel our best. And, I'm sure we can all agree, it feels good to know that we are working towards our goals. The scale should be a tool in your toolbox. Not the only tool and not the one you focus on the most, but one you can count on to be honest with you and a way to start paying more attention to your nutrition.

FOOD SWAP:

Have you tried an air fryer yet? I know so many people who are loving having food that tastes fried without the added fats, extra calories and the traditional oils found in fried foods. Fried food is not typically a healthy option if you are staying on track with your nutrition. An air fryer is a great option, that's also fairly fast and easy, if you want to enjoy that crunch and crisp with your foods. Try some Brussels sprouts, lightly breaded fish or sweet potato fries to get started!
TAKE ACTION OVER YOUR NUTRITION:

We offer a 3-pack of personal training for $95. You can mix and match your sessions to include personal training for fitness and/or nutrition coaching with Amanda. Email [email protected] to get started.
