Historical Tidbit:
Discussion with Former Fire Chief Oscar Gassett
The following is from November 13, 1972 to the Halifax Historical Society. Gassett was the Halifax Fire Chief for 34 years when this discussion took place.
Subject: "Firing Range During World War II"
(Proving Ground on River Street
)
Part 1
"Tennessee firm was looking for a place in this area to prove its ammunition as it was being manufactured. They chose here as we had all that land in Great Cedar Swamp. (One of the requirements for National Fire Works was that a place was needed to prove the ammunition as it was being manufactured.)
A lot of town’s people were asked to sell their land for this project. They did not want to do that. They were told that the Government would take it and that they could buy it back after the war.
With no notice, all of a sudden the firing (testing) started. Nobody knew it was going to happen, but all of a sudden they started firing. They had machine guns going at 7:00 o'clock in the morning until dark, around 4:30 pm - 5:00 pm. Not only machine guns but heavier guns with 30 millimeter cannon shells, 50
caliber
machine gun shells, 20 millimeter cannon shells and 40 millimeter cannon shells. The larger shells also, when on many nights, they fired star shells and tracers. All kind of things at night. It was quite an active place over there.
Unfortunately no one could go near it (the firing site) between the F.B.I. and the guards posted all around the area. Everything was secretive, very secretive. No one could find out about anything over there.
Strange things happened while they were getting into operation there. They built a target house 1000 yards down the range. It was all reinforced concrete. It had a 12 inch concrete roof on it. Now, these shells when they were fired, would go about 1000 yards. When the explosive end did not detonate the result was that they got stuck in the ground or stuck in the trees and it looked like a "pin cushion" down there.
The target house, as they were pouring it, had 12 inches of concrete about 20 by 20, the roof collapsed.
In the first part of the war one of the 88 millimeter German rifles that came from the new tanks they had when they met Montgomery in Africa, came over here to be tested. You couldn't find out about anything during the war but I know there was another gun from Sweden that came from a submarine. This is before the end of the war."

Second Aerial Spraying for Mosquitoes
- The Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources announced that due to the continued high risk of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), a second round of aerial spraying for mosquitoes will take place in specific areas of Bristol and Plymouth counties.
- Aerial spraying is anticipated to begin on Wednesday, August 21, and continue over several evenings between the hours of 8p and 4a. This is to avoid possible interaction with honeybees and fish.
- Residents are encouraged to visit the DPH website at www.mass.gov for the latest updates on spraying.
- The pesticide that will be used during the aerial spraying is called Anvil 10+10. This product has proven to be extremely effective in exterminating mosquitoes worldwide for over 20 years.
- Please be aware that while the count of live mosquitoes lessens after an aerial spraying, our risk stays the same. The virus is still out there in remaining mosquitoes! To avoid mosquitoes altogether, it is suggested to stay inside during their active feeding time: during sunset (around 7:30p.)

Fitzgerald Memorial Garden
Hi Beautification Friends,
We just wanted to share our gratitude to the crew at
C-Mac, Services
for their wonderful care of the Margaret Fitzgerald Garden! This garden, located outside the front entrance to the Halifax Town Hall, was dedicated on Memorial Day 2017 in honor and memory of former Selectman and long-time public servant for the Town of Halifax, Margaret "Peg" Fitzgerald.
If you have some time, stop by the garden to see for yourself. The flowers, such as red and purple verbena, were Peg's favorites and could be seen at her own vegetable garden at her home down the street. Gorgeous hydrangeas are also in bloom now and are so lovely.
Thanks for the TLC, C-Mac!

Preparation: the action or process of making something ready
I prepare for each day with a list goals I want to achieve. Inevitably, a monkey wrench; important conversation or spontaneous priority will side track me. I need that list to re-focus and remember what is important to accomplish.
“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” ~ Abraham Lincoln
“Your strength doesn't come from winning. It comes from struggles and hardship. Everything that you go through prepares you for the next level.” ~ Germany Kent
“Opportunity does not waste time with those who are unprepared.” ~ Idowu Koyenikan
“I believe luck is preparation meeting opportunity. If you hadn’t been prepared when the opportunity came along, you wouldn’t have been lucky.” ~ Oprah Winfrey

Inching forward, slowly improving my quality of life came from preparation, gaining knowledge and making mindful spending choices. We must prepare for the life we want, even if it's done in baby steps. ~ Jacquie
