Published on Tuesdays during the growing season for the freshest news from the farm
From the Farm
If you are a visitor to our CSA porch, you may have noticed some young faces these past 2 months. Senior Scouts Kaitlyn, Emma, Molly, and Morgan, members of Troops 1338 and 936 of The Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council, joined us as Volunteers this summer after taking a class at Coverdale Farm as part of their work towards the Locavore Badge.

Boy, were we glad to welcome them! With dishing out fresh portions of our CSA crew’s leafy greens, we needed some extra help. These girls met the challenge, even in the brutal heat spells of July and August, greeting customers and keeping the vegetables freshly stocked. Patrick shared the details about the vegetables of the day, the particular variety, their nutritional value, and how to use them, expanding their local vegetable experience.
The purpose of the Locavore Badge is to explore how the efforts of people committed to eating locally grown foods can be an important part of both healthy eating and improving the environment. In 2011 when the badge was introduced, Coverdale Farm developed a custom “Sow What" journey, starting with science and delving into the impact to the environment, farms, communities, and eaters.
The girls learn about Coverdale farming practices, including soil management, animal husbandry and vegetable production. They dig in for a better understanding of the importance of soil health to our food systems. They begin to examine how complex and how global food and land issues can be. They harvest vegetables from our Education Garden, and, of course, they work together in our teaching kitchen to create a “farm to table” meal featuring freshly-harvested seasonal dishes.
Special thanks to GS Troop 1338 Leader, Denise K for working out a way to support the girls’ interests while also complying with Delaware Nature Society’s policies for volunteers under 18.

Morgan, Molly, Emma, and Kaitlyn, we hope you had fun and will continue your locavore journey. We all thank you for your help. You are welcome back any time to visit or to dish some greens!
