Historical Tidbit: Charcoal
One of the earliest industries in the area was the manufacture of charcoal. The process of making charcoal was spoken of as "coaling" and by 1810 it had become an important business, being the fuel for many industrial furnaces in the area. Farmers "coaled a pit" in the fall after they finished harvesting their crops. It required about fifty cords of wood to make a pit and the burning demanded constant care and attention for a period of more than two weeks. As a result, most of the men built crude cabins near the pits. Here they lived while the work was going on, sleeping on a pile of straw, covered with a few old quilts and kept warm by the fire in a crudely fashioned fireplace. They had their food brought to them and kept constant watch. They had to stay on the job all the time for fear a fire might breakout instead of smoldering, or fear the fire would burn up all the wood instead of turning it into charcoal. My grandfather told me he used to watch the men burning charcoal. He would see the charcoal wood piled up and the whole mound covered over with earth. Usually the charcoal man would be almost as black as the charcoal from the dust and dirt of preparing and working the pit. After the "coal" was burned and raked out of the pits with specially designed long tooth rakes, it was ready to be carried to the different places where they had furnaces. This process was carried out locally as late as 1915-1920.

Second Aerial Spraying for Mosquitoes
  • The Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources announced that due to the continued high risk of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), a second round of aerial spraying for mosquitoes will take place in specific areas of Bristol and Plymouth counties.

  • Aerial spraying is anticipated to begin on Wednesday, August 21, and continue over several evenings between the hours of 8p and 4a. This is to avoid possible interaction with honeybees and fish.

  • Residents are encouraged to visit the DPH website at www.mass.gov for the latest updates on spraying.

  • The pesticide that will be used during the aerial spraying is called Anvil 10+10. This product has proven to be extremely effective in exterminating mosquitoes worldwide for over 20 years.

  • Please be aware that while the count of live mosquitoes lessens after an aerial spraying, our risk stays the same. The virus is still out there in remaining mosquitoes! To avoid mosquitoes altogether, it is suggested to stay inside during their active feeding time: during sunset (around 7:30p.)

Preparation: the action or process of making something ready

I prepare for each day with a list goals I want to achieve. Inevitably, a monkey wrench; important conversation or spontaneous priority will side track me. I need that list to re-focus and remember what is important to accomplish.

“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

“Your strength doesn't come from winning. It comes from struggles and hardship. Everything that you go through prepares you for the next level.” ~ Germany Kent

“Opportunity does not waste time with those who are unprepared.” ~ Idowu Koyenikan

“I believe luck is preparation meeting opportunity. If you hadn’t been prepared when the opportunity came along, you wouldn’t have been lucky.” ~ Oprah Winfrey
Inching forward, slowly improving my quality of life came from preparation, gaining knowledge and making mindful spending choices. We must prepare for the life we want, even if it's done in baby steps. ~ Jacquie
