AMARILLO, TX – Gov. Greg Abbott announced today (Monday, May 18) that Potter and Randall counties (which includes the city of Amarillo) will remain at current reopening levels related to COVID-19 for one week.
The governor announced Monday the next phase of reopening businesses in the state. There are five counties that will delay Phase Two of the reopening process for one week. The counties are Randall, Potter, Moore, Deaf Smith and El Paso counties.
The governor described the one-week delay as a “temporary pause” in the reopening process for these counties.
Current requirements for restaurants have been in effect since May 5 and for barber shops and salons since May 8. Gyms were allowed to open Monday at 25 percent capacity. These regulations and requirements remain in effect for the next seven days.
“The city has been working diligently with the governor’s office in formulating and crafting a response to COVID-19,” said Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson. “In a state the size of Texas, a one-size-fits-all policy does not always work. Keeping Amarillo and the community at the current reopening level for seven days is prudent and appropriate as we continue to address the spread of this illness in our community.
“We are grateful for the cooperation with the state and with the governor in addressing the individual needs of cities and counties during this pandemic. A one-week delay in moving ahead with an additional reopening phase ensures that Amarillo can continue to maintain our health care capacity.”

Amarillo Matters Expands Shop Local Efforts
|
|
If you are a Chamber Member business with fewer than 50 employees, be sure you sign up for the chance to win $1,000 for your business and $500 for one of your customers from Amarillo Matters. They have already named 3 business winners, including White Rabbit Antiques, Groovy Pop Gourmet Popcorn, and Real Deals - Amarillo. There's now even more money to be given away. Read the press release below:
Amarillo, TX--- Amarillo Matters announced Monday they’ve been able to raise an additional $20,000, which will be used to expand their ‘shop local’ efforts.
“We live in an unbelievably generous community,” Amarillo Matters President, Jason Herrick, said. “And we all understand the role small businesses play in our economy and know how important it is to show our support.”
In less than a week, Amarillo Matters was able to secure donations from FirstBank Southwest, Happy State Bank, and First United Bank, along with an anonymous donation that will bring the total investment into the community to $45,000.
“We are so grateful for everyone who has stepped up to support this effort and know that it’s going to have a positive impact on locally-owned businesses,” Amarillo Matters Treasurer, Andrew Hall, said.
Due to the additional support, Amarillo Matters will draw the name of two businesses every Monday, both of which will get $1,000 from the organization. Customers who shop at those two locations throughout the week will be eligible for an additional $500.
“We’re not done either,” Hall explained. “We continue to raise funds and will keep this going as long as we can.”
Anyone wanting to support this effort can make a gift at
www.amarillomatters.com. Supporters can enter “shop local” in the memo field, and their contributions will be restricted to this campaign.
To be eligible for prize money, businesses must be locally-owned, have less than 50 employees, and be a member of one of the local chambers of commerce. Businesses can still sign up to participate at
www.amarillomatters.com/shoplocal.
Each Monday, a participating business will be selected at random and awarded $1,000. The following Friday, one of the businesses' customers from the week will be selected at random to receive $500.
Businesses must complete the
online form
to be eligible.
