Dear Colleagues:

We lost one of our own this week -- a faculty member whom many had known and respected for decades and someone I valued as an important member of our college community. How sad we all were to learn that after a short illness, Dr. Ernest Svensson passed away on Monday.

In my travels across the country, I share news about the college with our alumni, and there was always a pleasant smile and story to be told when I let people know Dr. Svensson was still an active member of our faculty. I could see how happy they were to hear that our current students had the opportunity to learn from the same remarkable man who had been so helpful to them during their time in dental school -- in some cases, as long as 30 or 40 years ago.

For my own part, I always looked forward to seeing Dr. Svensson at our college events, including holiday celebrations, graduation ceremonies, retirements, and faculty meetings. He was a loyal contributor who always showed interest and shared insights. Students and alumni alike told me he was a "cornerstone" in our college. He was someone you could count on to be there when you needed him.

Of the many things I will remember about Dr. Svensson, none will be more lasting than the concern he demonstrated for others. For me, this was most evident in the way he sincerely inquired about how I was doing each time I saw him. No matter where we happened to connect -- in the college, somewhere on campus, or just out and about in Columbus -- he would ask how I was, and I knew it wasn't just a polite rhetorical question. He really meant it and he really wanted to know how things were going with me. When I responded, he listened with genuine interest and thanked me for stopping to chat. I will miss that.

Our college is a better place because of Dr. Svensson. He embodied what many of us aspire to be and he was a truly good person. How lucky we were to have him with us for so long.

Dentistry Dominates Homecoming Float Competition -- Third Consecutive Win!

Each autumn, the college's dental hygiene and dental students work with faculty and staff volunteers to build a float for the parade that kicks off Ohio State's Homecoming celebrations.

On Friday, October 6, the evening before the Buckeyes took on the Maryland Terrapins at the Homecoming football game, dentistry's faculty, staff, and students gathered on High Street to cheer on the college's float. This year's award-winning creation featured a giant replica of Brutus Buckeye dressed as a chef, stirring a steaming bowl of turtle soup. The float also included a colorful menu that invited onlookers to sample the turtle or "terrapin" soup
As one of the most elaborate entries in the competition, the float won the top prize, giving the college its third consecutive first-place win. The award includes a trophy and a cash prize of $1000 that will fund the construction of next year's float.

Dean Patrick Lloyd said, "With this victory, we know we have the 'recipe for success' now. Every winning entry must have vibrant colors, moving parts, and a strong football theme." He added, "This is the third time that our students' efforts have been rewarded with the top prize, and we're already looking forward to dominating the competition again next year! Go Bucks!"

College is Site for ADA's National "Give Kids a Smile" Kickoff Event: February 2, 2018

The College of Dentistry has been selected as the site for the American Dental Association's national Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) kickoff event that will be held Friday, February 2, 2018.
Competing against five other dental schools nationwide, the college was chosen as the national kickoff site in part because of its history of successful Give Kids a Smile events. Since 2012, the college has hosted biannual events that provided dental treatments for 1,100 children in Ohio, with a total of more than $318,000 in free dental care.

Remarking on the upcoming national kickoff at the college, Dean Patrick Lloyd said, "We are pleased and proud that our collective efforts have been recognized in this way. We know our success with Give Kids a Smile is due in large part to the fact that this initiative is led by students who gain leadership experience, and who will also be more likely to engage in GKAS events after they become dental professionals." He added, "We look forward to this national kickoff that gives us another opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children throughout Ohio who need the help we are able to provide."
