PTO News
Welcome back to school from your PTO! The PTO's mission is twofold: (1) to help build the TJ community and (2) to raise money that supports the TJ learning environment. The staff and teachers work so hard for the benefit of our kids but they can't do it alone! They need parent support. Our kids need parent support. There are so many ways big and small to give your time, talent and treasure to help make TJ the best it can be. Our goal is to have more people doing less. If everyone takes on a small piece, we can accomplish a lot. To get started, we do have some important positions that we are eager to fill. We are looking for parents to serve in the following roles:
  • Secretary (1-2)
  • Hospitality Committee members (3)
  • ArtFest Chair (1-2)
There are lots of other ways to jump in which we will talk about at our first meeting. PTO meetings are the second Tuesday of the month from 6-7pm at TJHS in room 111. (Mark your calendars!)  The first meeting of the year is Tuesday, September 10th.  PTO meetings are a great source of information so please make every effort come. Everyone is welcome!

Raise Money for TJ with ZERO Effort!
Check this out: we can raise money with ZERO EFFORT for our school. If you buy anything at American Furniture Warehouse and mention TJ, we get 2-4% donated back to our school! Check out this video and remember to tell your friends, neighbors, students, or even random people in the places you visit to mention TJ when buying anything at AFW!

Pretty cool to see our community partners helping us raise money for our students.
New TJ Mobile App!
We are proud to announce that TJ will be using a new and improved mobile app this year! The goal is to increase communication with parents and streamline information that families receive. If you did not download the app at registration, please see below and do so as soon as possible to prepare for the launch!
Art: An Empathy Movement
The Empathy Museum's "A Mile in My Shoes"
August 8 - September 27
10:00 am - 7:00 pm
Tail Tracks Plaza (on 16th between Wewatta & Wynkoop)

What's it like to step into someone else's shoes and view the world from their perspective? Find out as the Empathy Museum brings this idea to life with " A Mile in My Shoes," a traveling, one-of-a-kind, FREE participatory exhibition that allows participants to literally walk in someone else's shoes while listening to a story about that person's life.

From a Syrian refugee sex worker, to a war veteran and neurosurgeon, the stories housed in this shoebox invite participants on a profound journey of empathy that explores our shared humanity and creates deep, lasting mental impressions that last well after the physical mile is traversed.

The exhibit visits Denver as part of the Biennial of the Americas 2019 Festival Empathy In Action and will provide a unique opportunity for the community to think about and experience empathy in lead up to the Festival.

Mental Health and Social/Emotional Tips
Did You Know...?
Limiting kids' recreational screen time to less than two hours a day, along with sufficient sleep and physical activity, is associated with improved cognition (this includes memory, attention, processing speed and language - which are all critical for academic and regular daily functioning!)

69% of parents and 78% of teens check their devices AT LEAST hourly

72% of teens feel the need to immediately respond to texts, social networking messages and other notifications.

● The majority of parents (66%) feel their teens spend too much time on their mobile devices

●36% of parents feel they argue with their child on a daily basis about device use

●54% of children felt that their parents checked their devices too often

* 50% of teens feel they are addicted to their mobile devices *

So, as a parents or guardian, what can I do?

The American Academy of Pediatrics has some suggestions:

-       Make your own family media user plan
-       Treat media as you would any other environment in your child's life
-       Set limits and encourage non-electronic recreational time
-       Screen time shouldn't always be alone time
-       Model good behaviors for your kids
-       Know and model the value of face-to-face communication
-       Limit digital media for your younger family members
-       Create tech-free zones and times in the home
-       Don't use technology as an emotional support
-       Find apps for kids that support homework, mental health, relaxation, etc.
-       It is okay for your teen to be onlineà help them navigate the online world appropriately
-       Discuss and model online privacy and norms

Class of 2022 - Sophomores
The class of 2022 needs 2-4 additional parents to join parent Julie Rubin in planning fundraising events. The class of 2022 has two faculty sponsors,  Jillian Gleason and Maggie Kennedy, but parents are needed to work with the staff to plan fundraising activities. Parent sponsors also plan community building activities for the parents of the class of 2022.  Each class is expected to raise money needed to host their Prom, After Prom and other activities senior year.  The sooner the fundraiser get started, the more choices there will be for events senior year. The time commitment can be as little or as much you can share.   Your involvement in any capacity is important and appreciated. We are successful because of your behind-the-scenes contributions, large and small. It all adds up to a stronger community. An engaged parent body shows our students that we care about them!

If you need more information, contact [email protected] or Julie directly at [email protected].
