Quote of the Week. . .

Food for Thought. . .
This past week Pulitzer Prize winner and professor at Vanderbilt, Jon Meacham, made a point about the complexity of history and those who are the players within history. In fine Episcopalian fashion (Meacham is an Episcopalian), he walked the line between between castigating the founding fathers--especially Thomas Jefferson--for owning slaves and painting the whole democratic experiment of our forebears in rosy hues.  To paraphrase Meacham, it is not either or. We as humans and as societies possess both realities. We are able to do amazing and beautiful things, and we are capable of destroying the very life that we have been given or that others have been given.  To read more, click here. . .
Link of the Week. . .

Only in Minnesota!  At the Minnesota State Fair that runs the last two weeks of August, one of the most popular venues is the milk barn where they make sculptures of beauty queens out of BUTTER. . .

For Further Reflection. . .

This is not a huge piece, but it is an important reminder by the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, Michael Curry, that we, along with churches throughout the country, will ring our church bell this Sunday, August 25, to Commemorate the 400th Anniversary of Arrival of First Enslaved Africans in the Americas.

An excellent resource from the New York Times regarding the impact of the events of 1619 and slavery in America from The 1619 Project
