Message from Mrs. Kunze & Announcements
We had an extra EXCEL time today to give students one last opportunity to complete make-up work or seek help from a teacher before exams next week.

We have had some issues at the bus loop in the afternoon with students rushing buses before they have completely stopped. This is very unsafe, so to help us control the crowd we have painted a green line on the sidewalk. Students must stay behind the green line until the bus comes to a complete stop. Please help us by talking to your child about this new procedure, so we can ensure everyone's safety. Thank you in advance for your support.

Teachers have been busy making course recommendations this week for the 18-19 school year. Good News!!
Nease High School hosted this year’s HiQ Trivia District Competition , welcoming five schools to our newly renovated campus. Our Junior Varsity team, consisting of freshmen and sophomore students, defeated Ponte Vedra High in the final round, thereby advancing to the regional ompetition in January. And while our Varsity team was defeated in the semi-final round, because of their perfect season record, they are guaranteed a spot in Regionals! We are very proud of these students and expect them to be successful as they advance! Please visit our student created website for details about the matches including scores and brackets. http://hiqdistricts.blogspot.com/

JROTC ADVANCES IN NAVY JROTC NATIONAL ACADEMIC BOWL.  Congratulations to JROTC for advancing through the Level 1 competition of the National JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl (JLAB). More than 300 teams are competing for an opportunity to participate in the national championships in Washington, DC in June. Nease will now compete in the Level 2 competition in February against 50 other schools from around the nation with the top 4 earning a spot in the finals. JROTC team members are Emily Blackford, Lindy Gostage, Anna Hampton, Daniel May, Sinead Morgan, and Yuan Tian.

Girls Weightlifting

Senior Sarah Martyn (101) placed 3 rd in the SJRAC competition and 2 nd in the SJCAC. Sophomore Liz Thompson (129) placed 1 st in both SJRAC and SJCAC. Win In The DEN - Girls Basketball
The JV girls got things started with a complete dismantling of the opposition 53-7. Junior co-captain, Kiya Turner was honored just before tip-off. On the road at Englewood on Monday night, Kiya scored her 1000th career point and entered Thursday's game with 1017 points. She became the seventeenth player in Nease history to accomplish that feat. Not to be out done, the varsity ladies faced off with a very familiar foe in the night cap. Nease and Middleburg battled each other 5 times last year in closely contested games and the 3-2 edge went to the Lady Panthers.

Things would be much different on Thursday night in the “Panther Den.” In a battle of undefeated District comrades, Nease put together a definitive, defensive game for the ages. Using a big lineup (6-3, 6-2 and 6-1 front line) and assignment defense on the perimeter, The Lady Panthers unsaddled the Lady Broncos, disrupting their flow of the game in the process. Nease scored early and often, while keeping Middleburg open looks to a minimum. When the dust settled to end the first quarter, the Lady Panthers had a convincing 21-2 lead and the rout was on from there.

Nease extended the deficit to twenty-four points (37-13) at intermission. A 15-6 third period by the Lady Panthers sent out a very loud roar and erased any doubt about who the winning team would be on this night. With the dominating 59-29 victory, Nease (7-2) won their seventh straight game and remained undefeated at home (3-0), as well as in District play (4-0). Junior center, Camille Hobby led the way with her eighth double-double in nine games played (12 pts./10 rebs./4 assists), before being side-lined with an ankle sprain in the third quarter. Junior forward, Peyton Carter returned to play after missing a couple weeks due to concussion protocol. She responded by tallying 14 points and collecting 8 boards. Sophomore guard Karissa Niles, recovering from the flu, poured in 13 points, pulled down 7 rebounds and dished out 4 assists. Defensive specialist, Mykah Eshbaugh was stellar as usual in her assignment role. She gathered 10 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks.

Yes, The Lady Panthers passed the ultimate test with the STATEMENT win on Thursday. Nease continues to build momentum in their quest to return to 'Elite Status' in the state by seasons end. Ed White comes to the 'Den' next Tuesday for a District encounter.

THE PERFECT STORM!!
Not to be overlooked, the Nease Junior Varsity Lady Hoopsters are off to a successful season! The team presently sports a 5-0 record and looks to maintain their undefeated record for as long as time permits.
Terrence Washington is the head coach and he is assisted by Kendall Miller, a former Nease student/player. The team returns seven players from last year's squad, three of whom are present starters (Co-captain Junior Gabby Cordera, sophomores Cecilia Molis /co-captain and Melissa Blue). In addition, the starting lineup is completed with freshman guards, Grace Beyer and Taylor Bonazelli. The key reserve and catalyst off the bench is freshman Natalie Lovett. The team averages 56.4 ppg., while allowing opponents 17.8 ppg. Grace Beyer and Cecilia Molis, leads the scoring effort at 12.4 ppg. Bartram Trail (47-27) and Englewood (58-3) represents the Lady Hoopsters most recent victories. Nease JV hopes to continue their winning ways on Thursday in the 'Den' against Middleburg at 6:00 pm. On Saturday, the JV will host a tournament beginning at 8:00 am. Nease is scheduled to play at 2 and 5 pm. Pure competition definitely breeds success. With that being said, yes the future of Nease girls basketball looks P-R-E-T-T-Y G-O-O-D.

Coaches or Team Moms of sports/clubs can email Mrs. Kunze at Lisa.Kunze@stjohns.k12.fl.us by 4pm on Thursdays with any good news for their sport/club. Please use Arial font size 12. Thank you!

Before students are released for Winter Break, all Academy students will take part in the Intent to Return process through their Academy class. Students will be asked to indicate if they want to remain in their Academy for the 2018-19 school year by signing an Intent to Return roster. If the student checks “Yes,” than that student will be automatically re-enrolled in the Academy for 2018-19. If an Academy student checks “No” on the roster to indicate that he/she does not want to continue in the Academy next year, a form will be sent home for the student and a parent to sign, confirming that the student would like to be removed from the Academy for 2018-19.
In regard to Out of Zone students, district policy states that Out of Zone Academy students no longer have to fill out an Out of Zone Waiver each year. Simply being on an Academy roster acts as the student’s Out of Zone waiver.

College professors and high school teachers co-facilitate the monthly sessions at school, and encourage students to drive the conversation, ask questions and share opinions. Additionally, interactive program components off campus provide students the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in peer discussions. For content information see http://www.fpa.org/great_decisions

If interested, please join the Schoology group, “Great Decisions Nease” access code 5VTWW-9SNBQ. All events and opportunities will be announced through that Schoology group.

Please note that Great Decisions, The World Affairs Council of Jacksonville, and the Foreign Policy Association are not officially affiliated with Nease High School nor with the Saint Johns County School District. They offer these timely and relevant events to the community free of charge, and I believe they are valuable because they bear on the material taught in many of the courses here at Nease.
