Big changes envisioned for Union Station
Union Station turns 100 years old next year, and the city of New Haven wants to give it a face lift for its birthday.

Around two and a half million people travel through Union Station every year, but they don't stay long.

"We have a once in a generation opportunity here to renovate the station and really make it a destination for folks to come," said New Haven's Transportation, Traffic and Parking Director, Doug Hausladen.

Right now, the shops in Union Station sell things for you to grab go. Hausladen asks, what if the space enticed you to stay, instead? How about a wine bar on the unused mezzanine overlooking the grand concourse? Or what about a boutique hotel on the upper floors? They have the space now. Read More

Sikorsky, Teamsters launch student pre-apprenticeship program to create manufacturing jobs    
Help could be on the way to address Connecticut's well-documented shortage of manufacturing jobs through a partnership between Stratford-based Sikorsky Aircraft and the Teamsters Union.

Sikorsky, a subsidiary of defense manufacturer Lockheed Martin Corp., and the Teamsters, which represents about 4,000 workers at the helicopter manufacturer, are expanding their 18-year partnership with an aircraft manufacturing pre-apprenticeship program certified by the state Department of Labor.

The aircraft manufacturing pre-apprenticeship program allows students to apply the hours of work and study certified to any aerospace manufacturer, according to the two parties. Read More

9th Square On Cusp Of Transformation        
City officials, developers, and local business boosters embarked on an "investment tour" of the Ninth Square Thursday to showcase a host of new and planned projects designed to revitalize the southeastern corner of downtown.

The tour, hosted by the Town Green Special Services District and city Acting Economic Development Administrator Michael Piscitelli, kicked off in Pitkin Plaza just after 11 a.m.

Making seven different stops at surface parking lots that will soon be market-rate housing on Chapel Street and Crown Street, renovated affordable housing on Orange Street, and a planned new axe-throwing entertainment venue, the tour highlighted a burst of investment in new residential and commercial projects slated to transform a a neighborhood that has struggled recently with crime and vacant storefronts.
